Boris Yeltsin wins 87% of the vote against the establishment’s Communist Party nominees, and the government causes controversy with a plan to use unqualified staff as trainee teachers in schools
Everybody was awake and up in their nightgowns etc. to watch Daniel open his birthday presents this morning. He was very pleased with the offerings and, although a teenager, enjoys the birthday ritual. It was a beautiful, still, warm and sunny day today and I decided to work outside for a change. First, I had to take Debbie to the Offord stables and, on the way back, I gave Daniel his first driving lesson. The rest of the morning, I took the old Reliant spare chassis apart on the drive. Diana’s brother Chas and sister-in-law Chrisula came by this morning, as they had forgotten Daniel’s birthday present and sought to make amends (although such an impromptu visit makes things worse). They brought a strange story of looking after a sister’s newly adopted baby on weekdays which practice calls into question the suitability of the adoption.

I collected Debbie from her riding. She had taken her friend, Amy law, along with her and they had a nice time. It seems that Amy had her first jump on Sundance which was not entirely voluntary. I finished off my disassembly after lunch, removing the back axle and both wheels and road springs so that the parts could be taken off of the tarmac drive and safely stored in the inner garage. After tea, I cleared up and tended my ducks, doves and carp and then took a stroll around the Riverside area of Paxton on the warm evening. I then locked up, came in and resumed work on the election literature – this time laying out the ‘please vote today’ leaflets for all three candidates. The news this evening is of the results of the Russian elections, where Boris Yeltsin 87% of the vote against the establishment’s Communist Party nominees. A judicial report on the assassination of Mrs Indira Gandhi claims that there was a plot by a foreign power to undertake the assassination as an attempt to destabilise India. The government has come up with a plan to use unqualified staff as trainee teachers in schools and the unions are threatening strike action as a consequence.
