A trip to Huntingdon record office on a surprisingly warm and humid. Today to research the Cow Lane Godmanchester meadows where I was shocked to find that the land was subject to missing HDC manorial records! The afternoon working with Michael Pope and then this evening at the Southoe Parish meeting which was a nice friendly affair contrasting with that of St Neots town Council.
Plane and road accidents in the US claiming many lives, accusations in Ulster of unionists colluding with the security forces to target Catholics for execution and Hurricane Hugo is turning along the US coastline and half a million people have fled Georgia alone
A better night (at least it was long enough). After breakfast, I had to drive over to the Huntingdon Record Office to research the Cow Lane Godmanchester meadows and I got there just after 10am as arranged. I soon found out that this land had been held copyhold of Godmanchester Manor. This had been held by Godmanchester Borough, later joined with Huntingdon Town Council and finally taken over by the Huntingdonshire District Council (!).

The problem was that the manorial records ceased in the archive after 1878 which is a mystery. I had to start an enquiry (as a District Councillor) to find out what happened to them. Home before lunch and then I chatted to Michael Pope on the phone about last night’s St Neots Town Council meeting before the meal was ready. I spent this afternoon with Michael writing the rest of the Focus stories before we parted and I then went over to Kimbolton for my horse riding round. This evening, I had a Southoe Parish Meeting. A nice friendly affair where one’s presence is appreciated. The Structure Plan respects local views and allows only infilling and the ‘Save Our Southoe’ campaign funds are being put into a trust for five years and then passed to the Parish Council to spend on village affairs. Contrast all this with the St Neots Town Council meeting the other day. I got home in time for a reasonable bedtime.
The new goldfish is settling down in the conservatory pond and the dehumidifier is coping with the cooler nights. The news is of accidents in the USA, on planes and on the roads, with crashes claiming many lives. The row in Ulster goes on with the Unionists in collusion with the security forces and ‘targeting for Catholics’ for execution being the main charge. Thatcher is in Japan and Bush is planning a meeting with Gorbachev. Today was surprisingly warm and humid. Hurricane Hugo is turning along the US coastline and half a million people have fled Georgia alone, as wins just to 110 miles an hour.
