After a night of coughing, I had a lay in until Diana woke me with a tray of breakfast at 8.00am and little Della came and sat in bed with me. I then recovered by resting and watching snooker before supervising the use of the pool which upset Diana and Daniel with Di calling me a "bad-tempered bully", which probably summarised my struggle to get well.
I managed to update my financial matters and re-typed my action list, making some phone calls before giving up work for the day after before 9.00pm.
By the admission of its own senior ministers, the government faces its worst three weeks ahead with heavy losses expected in the local elections as Labour have a 25% opinion poll lead
I was coughing for much of the night but then got comfortable and had a lay in until Diana woke me with a tray of breakfast at 8.00am. Little Della came and sat in bed with me, having evidently had a row with Di and she sat and said how glad she was to have me. I did not know about the row and thought that she was worried that I had been too ill and tired to come to breakfast! I was in something of a groggy state today and worked casually at my journal this morning and again after lunch whilst watching the world snooker championships on television. I always want Steve Davis to win and he was fighting a classic game with Jimmy White.

Making a good contribution to this today’s Full District Council Meeting, despite my bad cough, after making some good preparations and putting in a low offer for Redgrave Post Office and Stores. My motion on the Poll Tax was the one chosen for debate and it attracted a range of speakers in the end. I was coughing so much in bed tonight that Diana opted to go and sleep in a spare bedroom.
The top West German politician, Oskar Lafontaine, was stabbed and badly injured by a woman at an election rally in Cologne, The Strangeways prison riot has been ended after 25 days by an SAS-style attack that isolated the remaining prisoners on the roof. The second largest ever UK trade deficit of £2.2Billion rocked the City again.
I had a bit of a lay in on a day that proved to be quite fine and mild for a change. I was slow to get up, get washed and fed and do some urgent but superficial tending of the conservatory. It was mid-morning before I settled down to prepare my notes for this afternoon's Full Meeting of Council and there was some doubt as to whether I would make it. In view of that, I took the precaution of telephoning the Labour leader, Jim Lomax, to warn him that I might need them to cover for me. I worked all the rest of the morning and just had a couple of calls including one from Freda. The valuer had put a conservative value of the bricks and mortar of the Redgrave Post Office and Stores of £160,000 which I suggested Freda convey to My Whitmarsh, the present owner, for him to consider for a while. We had already put in an offer of £158,000.

Waking up on a much drier, sunnier less-windy day to enjoy a croissant with the family and joined Di for her normal Tuesday visit to see her parents for morning coffee in Cambridge, dropping off my FOCUS artwork to our printers on the way. Some shopping and lunch at the Copper Kettle before coming home for a rest and recovery afternoon.
Attending to my fish and journal before attending a meeting of the Kimbolton School Society in the Spinney rather than the usual Castle Green Room. Home and ready for bed as I was very tired from my late nights and rather ill with this bronchitis of mine. In the city, a possible share rally turned into a slide again and a sample 6 of the 21 charge-capped Labour councils have successfully obtained leave in the High Court for a judicial review of the Secretary of State’s selective view of council expenditure.
The UK government again dragging its feet yet again and actively opposing plans for faster European union on the eve of Franco-German talks and the weekend European meeting. In Romania, 4,000 demonstrators broke through a police cordon and demonstrated in a square in the centre of Bucharest.
Today was much drier and sunnier with the cool breeze moderating so that the weather felt very much warmer. I woke up about 7.45am in the end and came down to breakfast of a croissant with the family. I then showered and washed quickly to get ready to join Diana for a trip to Cambridge. I phoned Percy to tell him what was happening and then set off with Diana, dropping off a letter from Carole to the press in St Neots on the way. Once at Cambridge, I went to deposit the FOCUS artwork with our printers and then we parked in the Round Church car park at 9.45am. This was in time to avoid a queue and we were able to stock up with cash before meeting Di's Mum and Dad for coffee.

Struggling on with my sore throat and chesty cough, I drove straight to Diss to collect all the Butterfield family from the station and then took them across to Stanton to see Mum, eating sandwiches I had ordered from the site shop and we then visited Redgrave Village Store and spent the next two hours talking to the owner and seeing round the entire building, including the attached cottage next door. We said we would get a valuation and so visited a valuer in Diss who will visit tomorrow and arrive at a value that would be the lowest he could reasonably arrive at and then report for a cost of £60 plus VAT.
Then home to resume work on the Bury FOCUS and keep at it until it was finished with Carole Crompton and her son, Alan, until 2.00am. It was a masterpiece in the end and would give her a real chance to close the gap. The Bonn government agreed to make a very generous offer a one for one exchange rate for East German marks up to a savings limit of 4,000 Eastmarks, A mad-cap scheme to mount the largest-ever takeover bid by offering "junk bonds" to buy BAT in London for £13.5billion has been dropped by Sir James Goldsmith and Chinese Prime Minister, Li Peng, is in Moscow to discuss Sino-Soviet troop reductions on their borders
A dry day today and milder but still cool. My chest was still giving me trouble and I was coughing with a sore throat. I had to go and spend this morning with Freda and Mum and so I had a little lay in and got showered and dressed for the task. I drove straight to Diss to collect all the Butterfield family from the station and then took them across to Stanton to see Mum. We had a nice visit for a couple of hours. I picked up some sandwiches that we had ordered from the site shop and we ate then there for lunch. Before leaving, we had a meeting for half an hour to review the plans for seeing the shop and discussed what we felt the property was worth.
