After some important domestic work with the swimming pool and conservatory, and then liaising with the District Council about the very unpopular large earthen barrier for the Little Paxton Gravel Pit Road, I completed the negotiations with Ross McKay and my colleagues about him joining our St Neots Town Council team.

Daniel arrived home this afternoon from University for the weekend, confident of passing his University first year exams, had been staying at Heronshaw and made plans for his new Norwich flat for the following year.

After my meeting last night, I had a hectic round of telephone consultations with colleagues and Sally decided that she would be happy to let the Eaton Socon members decide on what was best to be done. She was also actively engaged in the final arrangements for tomorrows "Thank-You" barbecue in Offord where we had eighty adult and forty child acceptances! I arranged for Diana's help with the shopping and food preparation as she was struggling a bit. I had go-aheads from Michael and Percy to complete the Ross McKay negotiations and therefore arranged this evening's meeting accordingly. I also spent some time this morning on the swimming pool and conservatory as the gardener did not come on Fridays.

The weather was mild and calm and so I vacuumed out the swimming pool and adjusted the chemical level. The water temperature is getting back up near 80degF after the heating had inexplicably cut out recently and I hope that the children will soon be swimming again. I took particular care to feed the peacock this morning which is now becoming quite tame. Later, I was beset with phone calls and letters from local people about the erection of a large earthen barrier for the Little Paxton Gravel Pit Road; and I eventually got on to the District Council officer concerned and asked him to consider briefing his boss to conduct a re-think on the project when he returns on Monday. Then Mike Sayward came round and gave me the latest papers on the Thurleigh commercial proposals which seems to involve the use of yet another consultant. Later on, I drafted the suggested press statements on Ross McKay joining our team, and also the necessary letters from Tony Carmedy and Ross McKay to complete the business.

Then, after tea, I went over to Eaton Socon to try and put the matter to rest. Percy and Derek joined me for the meeting with Ross and we met at Stratford Place before going over. We quickly agreed found out that Ross was prepared to join our party and recruited him to fill the emerging vacancy for the Town Council representing Eaton Socon. Percy had asked all of the remaining questions on behalf of our colleagues that needed answering about Ross and we both pronounced ourselves well satisfied. The announcement would be delayed by about two weeks to allow the way to be prepared but then a draft statement was agreed for thereafter.

Daniel arrived home this afternoon from University for the weekend. He seems to confident of his prelims (first year exams) that he will be taking shortly. He had his friends up to Heronshaw recently and tidied the place up and they enjoyed the experience. Together with three friends, he has booked his accommodation in a rented house for next term rather than continue in the hostel.
