A day of important meetings with my two Trustees making investment and taxation decisions and then with Percy and David Rooney about my decision to stand down from local political activity. Collecting Della from the school bus stop and having to insist that she did not run ahead again and then Debbie coming home from the Kimbolton dentist upset with her uncomfortable new brace. Di and I left the girls this evening to join the Blooms for dinner for a fine Chinese meal in Sawtry
The girls set off for school via the bus again and then I set about getting ready for the first of today's meetings. I was still a bit slow and groggy after my convalescence and the efforts of the week and so only just managed to get out on time to meet Roger Brittain and Gerard Chadwick at The Shrubbery, St Neots. We met for two hours and discussed my financial affairs with relevance to the forthcoming end of the tax year on April 5th. We also reviewed the action that needed to be taken with the possibility of a Labour Government after the election as I would need to shelter the estate from harsher Income and Capital Taxation.

A productive flying visit with Di to Wroxham where I successfully installed and tested my Wayplan cable on the Paxton Princess and decided the fridge insulation needed improvement. Home in time to collect Della from the school bus and Debbie from the Gym Club after. Then planning the river piling in Horning with Mr Amis and reading HDC papers until hearing from my S.W. Cambs colleagues who were concerned at my retirement and preparations for the General Election in the St Neots area
I was very tired last night and did not think that I would be able to drive to Norfolk today. However, over breakfast, I asked Diana if she would like to come and join me and do some shopping in Wroxham whilst I worked on the Paxton Princess and she agreed and off we went. We had loaded in time to leave by 9.15am and the journey took until 11.30am as we stopped for coffee at Snetterton. I managed to successfully-test my new Wayplan cable which worked fine; displaying its new location symbol at the logged position. Di returned for lunch at the cafe, and we had a nice bowl of soup and cottage pie to follow.

Progressing Kimbolton School Bus issues and then a shopping and haircut visit to St Neots and then making a good contribution to a full HDC Council Meeting after announcing to my reasons for retiring in May at the end of my current term. Sat exhausted in the playroom with the family watching the film "Overboard" and enjoying it until a short session writing and then to bed, tired, at 10.15pm.
It was the first day back on the school bus for Della today and it stopped, as planned, in Gordon Road for our daughters to board. Di was a bit upset, however, that the bus driver maintained that this was now to be the only official bus stop and that all the other children would have to walk across the village to here! I called the Domestic Bursar, John, who seemed to confirm this as policy but later on I found out that the other driver was stopping in two places in the village tonight and planning to do the same in the morning. I went out with Diana to St Neots afterwards and we had coffee together at Brackenbury's before I went for a hair cut and Di some shopping at Waitrose.

A social day, after a late start, taking Diana and five girls bowling in Bedford, to lunch at Pizza Hut and then an afternoon in the "Oasis" swimming pool for a long session swimming and using the whirlpools and water chutes. I was tired this evening for my planned meeting with Steven Bloom when he suggested doing without architects and modify existing boat-house designs, commissioning builders and piling contractors direct and he offered to do some research for me.
Earlier, a depressing note from Michael saying that he would not change his mind or be attending the next two HDC meetings and this confirmed my own intentions not to stand again for Council next May
I woke up feeling a bit groggy this morning after my return to work yesterday. and then down to have breakfast with the family where everyone, except Diana, were wearing their dressing gowns. A depressing start as a short note from Michael said simply that he had given my request much thought but had decided not to change his mind; adding that he would not be attending the next two HDC meetings. After a little thought, I decided that this therefore confirms my own intentions not to stand again for Council next May as I am not going to make expensive personal sacrifices if he is not to make a small one to compensate. A little writing and then out in mid-morning to start our social and family day by going bowling.
