Fantastic luck for us LibDems in the forthcoming Hemingford & Hilton election campaign as their chosen candidate Mrs Lindy Horner could not be more unpopular. The former wife of the bankrupt estate agent that owned "Lines", she is remarried to Mr Horner; previously convicted on separate occasions of "clocking" second hand motor cars and being in possession of a load of stolen shoes!

The Tories reacted badly to us taking the initiative in getting out in the by-election and, as well as organising more canvassing morning and afternoon today, I also had to counter their press stories of us campaigning during a "moratorium" following the death of John Smith.

Of course, this was rubbish as it only applied to the European Election Campaign and it was really intended as a spoiling attack and smoke screen for their lack of readiness, but I had to reply to it nevertheless. More difficult going amongst the large plush houses of Hemingford Abbots; some of which made The Hayling View look small and inconsequential in comparison. Even so, a surprising degree of support due, it seems, to the total unpopularity of the Tory Candidate, Mrs Lindy Horner.

A group of traditional Conservative supporters wanted to put up an Independent to oppose her but were thwarted by the absence on holiday of the Parish Clerk and there being no posting of the Notice of Poll on the village notice boards. The former wife of the bankrupt estate agent that owned "Lines", she is remarried to Mr Horner; previously convicted on separate occasions of winding back or "clocking" second hand motor cars and being in possession of a load of stolen shoes for his aptly-named "Swag Shop" retail outfit!

She also speeds around the village in her red sports car sporting her personal number "L1 NDY" and upsetting everyone. To quote one Tory, "I am not voting for that blonde "Bimbo"!" and another canvassed Tory "I'm on the committee and even I am undecided". She is surely a boon to our campaign and I wonder what degree of incompetence the Tories have sank to. I decided to join Diana for the trip into Cambridge for the morning and we had a good chat to her parents.

The sales formalities for their Spanish villa are complete and they will soon be getting the money. Charles is still interested in our old Escort and today also found me chasing up the insurance brokers over the repair. A blazing row with the Lifesure general manager over them calling Hambro Legal Protection off of the case over an alleged lack of premium just when they were on the point of resolving the matter. I got a conciliatory call later on confirming that they had re-instructed them to work on our behalf.
