News of a deepening Financial crisis, The City of London has been hit by its oldest merchant bank, Barings, losing £400m on foreign exchange dealings in Singapore.

After more time on my LibDem St Ives Inquiry and accounts, a disappointing attitude from Wiggly who could not find time to talk to me, having a date. and another reconcillation with Wiggly

Tragic news last night after Nigel Benn's boxing opponent, Gerald McClenan, collapsed in his corner after being counted out and then had to have an emergency operation in a London hospital.

This has reopened the argument about whether boxing should be banned, even though the sport has gone to elaborate pains to have medical precautions on hand. The British Medical Association is adamantly against the sport.

The City of London has been hit by its oldest merchant bank, Barings, losing £400m on foreign exchange dealings in Singapore and a backer has to be found by the morning to avoid an even deeper world financial crisis.

Sein Fein have called for their direct involvement in direct talks and the release of all Republican prisoners but the government have said that the time is not yet right. The slowest morning yet as I lay in and tried unsuccessfully to pet Diana into some fun but found more success with my Psion telephone conferencing. Aren't machines so more predictable than people?

A particularly interesting "Letter from America" courtesy from Alistair Cook on the radio this morning who told of the 120-year-old woman, now the world's oldest, born in 1875 and trying unsuccessfully to evaluate the secrets of longevity.

She had not taken any exercise or dietary precautions but had given up smoking "some years ago" (three to be exact). He told also of the American man who had been accused by his two doctors of being "a living time bomb" because of his bad habits.

Of course, both doctors died but he lives on! To my office, playing the whole morning for the most part with my new toy but I did have telephone conversations with both LibDem County and District Group Leaders about the Stuart Littlewood/St Ives Enquiry. I am quite optimistic about finding a solution agreeable to most and hence acceptable by all except the delinquent and disagreeable.

Percy met Stuart Littlewood later today and appeared to get agreement on joint editorial control with him and hopes to get the St Ives FOCUS out soon. This afternoon, working on the inquiry again and again this evening. I tried telephoning both Nigel and Wiggly to arrange our dates for the week but Nigel was just back from Spain and promised to phone back but did not.

More upsetting, not only was Wiggly too busy cooking her dinner when I telephoned, but she would not be in later as arranged to talk to me having another date (presumably with Mike again) to go to the pictures

. She then added insult to injury by suggesting that I Email her in the morning which I shall not. Her relationship with Michael seems to be developing just as fast as our own is deteriorating and, if she does not handle me better, my jealousy will cause the end of it.
