Hot and humid day for Little Paxton fete as Dan and I work on varnishing The Lady before and I watch TV afterwards and hear that Frank Bruno knocks out his US opponent in round 2 and the Treasury cuts finance for the NHS but safeguards spending for defence
The most uncomfortable day yet. Though the sun was only reasonably hot, it was so humid and hazy that it was most uncomfortable and difficult to do anything energetic. Early to The Lady, however, and first I sponged down the mahogany and then lightly sanded the surface to take the first of four coats of full gloss varnish, Daniel helped by scraping a patch that has deteriorated.

Dan and Deb ill at home as I have a office catch up day and complete Byte Shop reorganisation and arrangements for Minister’s meeting. The Thatcher government cutting N.H.S. budgets but fortunately the hanging vote fails
Another very hot and humid day. An early start whilst Daniel and Debby stay at home in bed with sore throats and coughs. First to let the ducks out and then to the office and to see Derek Weatherby. After agreeing unanimously the new Job Title for Peter King, he phones at 9.00am and I am able to confirm his new title as The Managing Director of The Byte Shop Limited.

Manchester visit to reorganise the Byte Shop Group and appoint a new MD and then sadly home too late for Daniel’s school meeting and the news that he has passed his Kimbolton School Entrance Examination
A 7.00am morning call and Guardian Paper to read. In common with last night’s television news the principal stories are the forthcoming hanging vote for which there is thankfully not a majority and the budget cuts to the Nationalised Industries. The miners are, yet again, to seek Pit-Head Ballot support for strike action. The treasury are wishing to cut back on Health and the government are not denying that the real value of unemployment benefit will be allowed to fall.

Purge London Byte Shop, chairing BMMG council and flying shuttle to Manchester
One very busy day, and in hot and sultry weather. First a variety of office work and gathering together of files for a two day session of meetings, then by train to London at lunchtime and the hire of an interview room at the Great Northern Hotel close to Kings Cross Station. I first ask Bob Robinson to join me and hear his side of the story and then explain that in the company’s view he cannot continue as The London Managing Director due to acts of gross discourtesy and indiscretion.

Very hot day of personal priorities, Byte Shop Nottingham concerns and bank discussions
Another fine and very hot day. Conditions in the factory were close to tolerance level because, of course, we have no air conditioning of any sort. Proposals are to hand for our new building – a customer services building – but these are a year away to completion and the Sales Director, for one, does not think we can manage in the meantime.
