The completion of the sale of the Comart Group and the start of my retirement at the same time as myself and my family become ‘rich’ after which I tour the factor and say my ‘goodbyes’ as the world continues to spin (apart from actor James Mason, who dies of a heart attack!)
Up fairly early, awoken by morning tea from Diana, but with no relief from my cold and throat infection. The air temperature was very warm today, nearly 80degF, from warm west winds even from little sun; but this was a second reason why I was smarting and feeling rather weak on this important day. I cut a pink rosebud from the rose bushes, dressed it and pinned it as a charming buttonhole on my brown suit. To the office for 9.00am and up to the first floor to open all of the windows in the meeting room and the reception room. We had set out the meeting room with eight chairs and the new boardroom table. In the large front room was a trio of tables at left end to accommodate the buffet lunch, a table in the middle to serve the drinks and a cluster of four coffee tables and fifteen chairs to allow intercourse and lunch to be taken with minimum risk. I set camp in the conference room with chair to my left reserved by telephone and files for Diana, and reported for the first meeting.

Last minute preparations for tomorrow’s Comart sale Completion before home tired and weary with my cold and chest infection as STC takes over ICL
My last working day and many last minute preparations with the majority of the morning spent on finalising things for tomorrow’s completion and talking to Nigel Smith about yesterday’s events. An appointment and meeting with Alan Frazer, Chairman of GEC Computers and UK ITO, and opportunity to hold forth on my news on Industry Policy and Information Technology. Then to get June Hamilton across to review the company admin preparation and brief her on the remainder that needed doing. A hasty sandwich brought back by Derek Weatherby and then to the Grove House meeting room to prepare to start a Group Review Meeting.

BMMG meeting and then Comart press conference at The Tower Hotel and then on a Thames barge for drinks and a buffet lunch as the terms for the Jaguar privatisation are announced
A rather hectic day. Up on time, breakfast and off in my Jaguar to Owles Hall for the BMMG meeting. I arrived early at 9.30 as arranged with Nigel Smith, but nobody else there and I chat with Helen Gibbons for a while. She owns this beautiful old building and its lovely grounds but the fabric’s state of repair is deteriorating and her income is not up to the running costs. The amount earned since the death of her husband by providing administration for Trade Associations does not cover her expenses. However, having resisted all this, Nigel Smith arrives and we spend time before 10.00am reviewing the outstanding action items. Then to the meeting and, with hardly anyone there, it is agreed that I be appointed to serve as Director General on a part time basis.

Day at Grove House organising and administrating the Comart sales deal and evening dinner with Nigel Smith talking about my new BMG role as Miners picket in bad humour and local authority rate capping is started
Up to our morning drinks and breakfast and to the office at Grove House close to my old time of 8.30am. I took in the Rover (FRP 96X) for the last time and left the keys with reception. Several more Profit Sharing Scheme Proxies received today and also a letter from Richard James summarising the intended completion arrangements. I sort out the last three Comart Ltd Directors Meeting Minutes and paste them into the statutory books for safety, copying them to Derek and John for completion. Also to send off the form for a Saint Neots Private Box for my future mail. Then to Little End Road and a morning’s Comart Computers Review Meeting.
