Unsuccessful auction visit to Peacocks and not much computer work accomplished but approved of Daniel’s school progress as The Liberal/SDP Alliance makes mayor Council gains, Legionnaire’s disease spreads in Staffordshire, Enoch Powell’s divisive Bill passes in the Commons due to a technicality and two more Basque bombs explode in the Spanish tourist resort of Alicante
Awake to the sound of Daniella crying and Di shut in the kitchen sipping her coffee and not able to hear! A good night, but awoke full of cold symptoms still. The paper, breakfast and then up to wash and dress as Debbie is taken to school. Out to the birds – 9 eggs again – and then to the office soon after 9.15am. an hour or two opening the mail and actioning a few BMMG items by phoning Roy Fuscone of NEDO, Bill Unsworth and Helen Gibbons. Joan brings me a coffee as Diana has gone shopping to town and then I lock up and set off for the Peacock auction in Bedford. A fair stint, calling at Barclays bank for some cash and McDonalds for a cheeseburger in between, but no successful bids. The Georgian butlers tray table went for over £300 instead of the £50-100 I was allowing. Home in mid-afternoon and, after tea to drink, a couple of hours in the office. I updated our financial investment summaries and dealt with a few matters, but did not have the energy to update the computer files.

To Bedford to the Peacock’s Auction viewing after looking after Della on a cold County Council elections day after some office work and duck husbandage but nothing of much interest as US President Reagan visits a German War cemetery, Thatcher’s UK government considers cuts to social security and pensions against manifesto commitments and unemployment rises to 3 ¼ million with Tory Cabinet members voicing their opposition in public
Another dry day with the cold wind still prevailing. My cold was as bad as ever, but improved in the evening. The weather forecasters keep saying it should be warmer at this time of year, but it is no compensation. Awake early and turned Diana out of bed after another unsettled night. I read the morning paper and went down early to breakfast. As Diana was not ready with a boiled egg, I settled for toast and fruit juice and then got dressed and out to the birds. 9 eggs as usual. To the office for a while and time to reconcile my Barclays bank account and check about the payment of BOS VISA and gas accounts. It seems they have received the monies I sent and the post strike had an influence. Back to the house for morning coffee and then off by car to Bedford and the viewing of lots for tomorrow’s antique sale at the Peacocks auction rooms. No silver of interest to me, but a few quaint items such as a brass stem boat lamp and butlers tray table. I don’t think I shall go tomorrow, but we’ll see. Back home in time for a quick lunch of soup and rolls and then to look after Della for 1 ½ hours whilst Di goes to her keep-fit classes. Problem was Della soon had a dirty nappy, but I managed to distract her until Diana came home to change it.

To Cambridge via St Neots for financial transactions, a car check and coffee at Belinda’s and then to Acorn Computers with Chris Shelton to talk networks before lunch at The Copper Kettle and to The Early Learning Centre for a sandpit for Debbie as the TGWU are accused of Ballot Rigging and Mayday demonstrators are dispersed by water canon in South Africa. Freda’s daughter Stacey gives birth safely to a baby girl as Mum and Dad arrive in Holsworthy to see them.
A good night’s sleep, but still full of cold as I wake to my morning tea. The paper and quickly to finish it before breakfast for once. A change as I choose cereal (frosties) to have instead of toast, with the top of a fresh bottle of milk to add to the flavour. I wash my hair, shave and wash and am dressed by the time Di returns from taking Debbie to school. I feed the birds (9 eggs) and load up the car for our trip to Cambridge. First to drop into St Neots and to pay my £110,000 cheque for special clearance into Barclays and pay £1000 into the Homelink/Bank of Scotland account and transfer the rest to Gateway Building Society. The Abbey were staff training for half an hour and lost out! On to Cambridge and I dropped Di off at the edge of town for some window shopping before driving on to Marshalls to leave the car. They were conducting a safety check and preparing some estimates on the bodywork repair and baby belts fitment. On by taxi, after a wait, to Belinda’s coffee bar and a quick coffee with Diana before off by taxi again to the Acorn Computers factory and Head Office at Cherry Hinton Road, Fulbourn.
