A day shared between buying materials and renovating Bill’s shed with Daniel’s help and working on my investment summaries as Russia recriminates against officials culpable for Chernobyl and admits 8 are dead, 35 in serious condition with radiation burns and 209 are injured. More Libyan diplomatic expulsions but we cut our conventional defence budget and increase spending on Trident whilst the US announces grandiose space plans
Slept well and went through my normal routine, dressing in clothes for going out. But first I spent a couple of hours in the office, keying in much of the information for our family income summary for tax purposes. Then off to St Neots with Di and, whilst she was shopping in several stores, I spent the entire time in ‘The Handyman’ bespoking a range of accessories and materials; 2 rolls of roofing felt, tacks, a large selection of gutters, down pipes and accessories and the plastic plumbing – all for the rehabilitation of Bill’s shed and the avoidance of the deluge of water between it and the workshops each time it rains.

Working on Bill’s Shed and tending the ducks and doves today with Della enjoying the flowers and shrubs and then some ‘borrowing’ sums with Debbie as conflicts with Syria and the Lebanon dominate the news and pickets complain of last night’s police horse charge at Wapping
Slept well again and I doubt I shall have any further trouble now that the heating is off. Morning tea a little later than normal, as we have a small lay in and then washed and dressed for some chores today. A good fried breakfast, which I enjoyed, and then out to Bill’s shed. I moved away all of the rocks, bricks and tiles from the rear of it and drove in three poles to support as many rows of planks. The idea is to keep the earth away, as we build up the start of the causeway. This took most of the morning, what with tending the ducks, doves and Della (who follows me around like a little lamb, now I am home more often).

Debbie was a good companion; joining me in bed to have her nails cut, opening her Abbey National share account for £10 with a Mickey Mouse passbook cover and to do some shopping in St Neots as the Morris dancers took part in the folk festival. Liverpool win the cup and league double and the EEC bans food imports from Eastern Europe
A better night, until woken from a deep sleep by the morning drinks. Debbie came in to my bed to sit with me and I cut her nails for the first time in a while. Showered and shaved whilst listening to the radio farming programme – a tough time for the beef industry, with low price-sensitive consumer demand and a desire for methods that produce more attractive and leaner meat.

Some time with Debbie playing old gramophone records after a poor night of variable heating until off to Bedford with the girls and then back via St Neots for more shopping before completing my new workshop electrics and loading the storage shelves. The Liberals trounce Thatcher’s Tories in the local elections and national by-elections Elizabeth Shields wins Ryedale and so Thatcher skulks at Chequers as Chernobyl gets international supervision and teachers negotiate a wage increase
A very poor night. The central heating had left my room temperature at nearly 70degF at the start and, having stripped off the bed and opened the windows, I awoke feeling cold in the early morning! Showered, hair washed and down to a breakfast of boiled duck egg with the others. Dressed in my sports jacket and trousers, I settled into my office to do some paperwork. Lacking in resolution, I soon was distracted by Debbie and I played her some classics on the old gramophone – Blue Danube, Sugar Plum Fairy etc., until the carpenter arrived and I get him putting on the weather boards for all of the outside doors.
