A rainy day after a poor night after an earlier bedtime and then to work on supervising Elm Leisure as Di took Della to Bedford and then we returned together later to watch ‘Crocodile Dundee’ as the US president’s Chief of Staff resigns over the ‘Arms for Iran’ scandal and yet another British Army Chinook crashes killing its passengers and crew

I had opted for quite an early bedtime, but I had a most restless night for my trouble. It was a bit milder, but I am sure that an active mind was the biggest trouble. Got up all right and joined the children at breakfast, but I immediately had to get Daniel to go back upstairs to let his bath water away from last night! A look at the mail after breakfast. Di and the girls started off early for Bedford and I tried to get down to work. I first read a number of computer journals, but then the Elm Leisure builders arrived and I sorted out the inner garage for them and was slightly unsettled after that. They erected the block wall today, but left the ceiling and will have to do that on another occasion.

No sign of the girls returning for lunch and so I tried to make my own salad lunch, although I had been left precious few materials. Di had been shopping yesterday – I do not know what she buys! Back to it this afternoon, after a little play with the girls. I typed a few letters and also copied the Paxton Hall sections for the comment of another amateur historian – Linda Reed. I kept checking on both the builders and the baby dove today and both seemed to be all right. Tea with the family (trout for me) and then Di and I got ready to go out, as I had offered to take her to the cinema. We first hand delivered my letter in the St Neots area and then drove the Daimler to Bedford. The film we saw was ‘Crocodile Dundee’, which was a bit obvious in the plot and dialogue, but otherwise OK. An enjoyable evening. Daniel looked after the girls. Home late and sat in bed for a while, writing up my journal and drinking my Bournvita, whilst Di moaned at me for this. The news today was all about the aftermath of the by-election glory for the Alliance at last – but also of the inevitable arrival of Regan’s resignation (the Chief of Staff, not the President). A British army Chinook helicopter crashes in the Falklands, killing its complement of crew and passengers. A milder day today, humid, with quite a downpour of rain in the morning. There is some sun forecast for the weekend. I taught Debbie to read the time in quarter hours today and encouraged Daniel to do his long overdue sketch for his art master. Di bought a toy iron, ironing board, and clothes drier from a charity sale.
