Better sleep on a very cold night but feeling ill this morning before lunch with Di's mother Norma before visiting Nigel and Lyne after a rest and talking about schooling etc. News today that the government has given the go ahead for an American-designed pressurised water reactor for installation at Sizewell. Sizewell B, the end of our own technology, former MI5 agent, Peter Wright, is awaiting the judgement of the secrets case in Australia, Pop singer, Boy George, has been charged with possessing cannabis and US, President Reagan has suffered a snub by the House of Congress, who have refused a request for a further $100 million and another 30,000 teachers, in 11 education areas, staged ½ day strikes today and, of course, Thatcher has condemned them
Slept reasonably on a very cold night, but awoke with a headache, which got steadily worse. On time, down to breakfast and sorted out the children and their rooms. Eggs for breakfast this morning, which we all enjoyed. To the office and started sorting out my outstanding action items and papers. My headache was too bad and so I lay in the lounge for a little while. Deciding that a walk might help, I put the camera in my pocket and dressed up for a tour of the village in the cold, but sunny weather. Walked along the tow path and then through the village centre, taking photographs of the allotments, the old school, and a number of other houses, including Rose Lawn. Home before lunch, but still had the headache, that had turned into a rather sick migraine. Took a couple of aspirin and gradually recovered, as Di's mother joined us for a nice salad lunch.
This afternoon, I decided to phone Nigel Smith and then went round to see him. He showed me over the grounds of Hail Weston House and it had come on quite a lot, with his ‘sunken garden’ the latest creation. Went in to have a cup of tea and spoke to Nigel and Lynne about schooling. They had also been having trouble with their children’s education – who doesn’t – but they advised me to get Daniel to take his ‘O’ level early. Home then and another phone call from Miss Hazelton. A slow evening, helping Daniel and Debbie with their work and then cutting out the Little Paxton items from the local papers. A discussion with Dan and Di this evening and we decide to ask further about the exam syllabus for Daniel's mathematics. Phoned my Dad today and found out that Mum is out of intensive care. The government has given the go ahead for an American-designed pressurised water reactor for installation at Sizewell. Sizewell B will be the second nuclear reactor on the site. The CEGB is already seeking permission to build a second at Hinkley Point in Somerset. This decision spells the end for the British gas-cooled reactor programme and the decision has already been condemned by the opposition political parties, who will all reverse the decision on safety grounds. The 47 Liverpool city councillors have lost their last legal battle and have been found guilty of misconduct by five legal Law Lords and they are being surcharged at least £8000 each. Liberal councillors, led by Sir Trevor Jones, will now run the council of Liverpool, until the local election in May. Labour’s Employment Spokesman, Norman Prescott, has been involved in his second House of Commons row, this time sounding off at a Conservative MP, who had been involved in publicising the last exchange. The former MI5 agent, Peter Wright, is awaiting the judgement of the secrets case in Australia, which is expected anytime, and he has been admitted to hospital with high blood pressure, which is not surprising. Pop singer, Boy George, has been charged with possessing cannabis at Kentish Town Police Station, London, today, after being first arrested on December 20th last year. In the US, President Reagan has suffered a snub by the House of Congress, who have refused a request for a further $100 million and asked for a report on what happened to the last grant of aid. Another 30,000 teachers, in 11 education areas, staged ½ day strikes today and, of course, Thatcher has condemned them. The voting has taken place today in David Penhaligon’s old seat of Truro and the Liberals are favourites to retain it. One of the US ‘Hawks’, Assistant Defence Secretary, Richard Perle, has resigned, ostensibly to devote time to being an author. He had been one of the most outspoken critics of past superpower arms treaties.
