Some positive responses from the History consultees and then a good meeting with Jack Ramply of Southoe before my SLD meeting this evening, where canvassing help for me is being organised and I just need to organise the election address deliveries. The Royal family arrive home after their skiing disaster, Reagan has deepened the Panama crisis over stopping paying canal costs, another arrest over the Guinness scandal and Labour pushing the Tories hard over the NHS on Budget Day
Had a fitful night’s sleep and was then awake early. Had my morning drink and took an early shower and read the paper whilst waiting for breakfast. Then I caught up on yesterday’s journal, the morning mail, and sorted out another couple of history mailings. I continued to get replies today – the Cock Audley chap popped round and I had phone calls from the Birches and old Post Office. The owners seem pleased with the information and each have more to give in return. Then typed up a campaign report for this evening’s election meeting and had a late lunch when I had finished. A pink salmon salad and then off to see Jack Ramply of Southoe. I spent two hours with the old gentleman, who is getting very deaf. In the end, I stopped short of asking him to sign my nomination form, but had another good chat about Little Paxton history. Home in late afternoon, finished my typing and had tea. Spent this evening at the SLD meeting.

Working on my press cuttings and history consultation copies and regretting delays I getting my Rolls Royce Corniche before out with Percy this evening to secure more election support and help, completing the nominations that I needed. News of a right Royal skiing accident with The Prince of Wales narrowly avoiding death from an avalanche, his friends killed and badly injured and Princess of Wales and Duchess of York having falls whilst pregnant.
Was up on time this morning and ready for breakfast of croissants and fruit juice. After this, I read today’s mail and then the national and local newspapers. A steady job cutting out Little Paxton press cuttings for my scrap book. Di took Daniella to playschool this morning and then spent the day at home doing housework. I continued sorting out my history consultation copies and putting them in envelopes for distribution and also looking at the Exchange and Mart for registration numbers for the Reliant. Came across a few fairly anonymous ones cheaply, but felt that Percy justifies something a little better than that. Di was home for lunch and we were joined by her mother. We tried to chat over the meal, but Daniella kept trying to stop us! She must learn to give way to grownups when in company. Bad news this afternoon, as I found out that transfer delays meant that I could not collect the Rolls Royce Corniche tomorrow, which put me in a bad mood over tea. Got showered and changed for this evening’s efforts, but Percy arrived late after engaging a Buckden supporter who is to promote the rival SDP.

Reorganising The Hayling View dining tables so that we could use them better in the kitchen and then writing to all of the houses featured in the book to invite their response and eventually gain their support before a meeting with a local journalist and then a joint visit with Percy Meyer to known electors to support my nomination. The Queen Mother is distressed that award she opened a year ago now closes due to NHS cutbacks and ken Baker and Thatcher disagree over education policy. Bush leads the race for Republican nomination for the US presidency
Slept well again and then up for breakfast. After dressing, I insisted that Diana and I sorted out the tables in the kitchen. We put the Ercol refectory table back in position, changed our newer seat cushions onto Mr & Mrs Jackson’s old chairs and the combination was far more suitable for the kitchen. Now there is sufficient space with five people sitting so that you can walk through the room. We put the extending table in the dining room temporarily and then I phoned the restoration firm and cancelled Friday’s collection. The job they were to do was expensive and it would have been unsatisfactory as a partial job anyway. This morning, I typed up letters to all of the Little Paxton properties featured in my book, enclosing a section with their house featured and inviting their response. This will fulfil a dual function of getting any further input for the publication, and acquainting the owners with me for later help in the local election. Lunch in our new table configuration, which was most satisfactory, and then I continued my letters after. Then the meeting with the St Neots Weekly News journalist, who I helped considerably with the article she was writing on the village. I will expect some election coverage in return, when the time comes.

A full day working on my History of Little Paxton, printing out sections including photocopied pictures and artwork and then an evening sorting out the aftermath. The Irish Premier, Haughey, has spoken out against the SAS action in executing the IRA terrorists, rather than taking the three unarmed men into captivity as this casts the IRA in the role of martyrs, rather than murderers. The Royal College of Surgeons make another call for further spending to relieve the crisis in acute surgical services and the tram drivers at Kings Cross have now decided to call a 24 hour strike next Monday in support of NHS workers.
To bed at 11.00pm last night and then a fine and deep night’s sleep. Up, and down to breakfast in time to eat a nicely done boiled egg with the family. Then started the long printing process for my pre-war book section plus The Grove, which literally took all day. Such a tiring process, continually reloading the printer with top + 3 carbon copies and then photocopying the intervening pictures and other images onto the gaps. I took a break for lunch for an hour and needed the break from the noise and strain. I made myself a cheese and pate salad, with a pie and ice cream to follow. Back to it all afternoon, but, once Di had returned from Cambridge, I took the Range Rover across the common to Clover Office Supplies and bought some more paper and carbons to continue. After tea, I then spent the evening starting to sort out the mess, store reference information and tidy my desk. I ended up with a clearer idea of that still to do. The news today is of the aftermath of the IRA incident in Gibraltar. Gibraltar police found the third car with 200lbs of explosives today. Meanwhile, the Irish Premier, Haughey, has spoken out against the SAS action in executing the IRA terrorists, rather than taking the three unarmed men into captivity.
