On a very hot day, I opened up the house and noticed my new Koi carp being a victim to fish lice before mowing the games lawn closely and then rushing off to attend the opening of the Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, meeting the Redland directors and an actress from Howard’s Way. Poor European election results from the Democrats later, but Labour do well against the Tories as Salman Rushdie’s book is back in the headlines
I had a bit of a lay in this morning and then we opened up the house on another warm day. My new Koi seems to have fish lice on its back and tail and so I isolated in it in a tank and treated it with Sterezin, which took a while. It is always so upsetting when fish are sick, and it always happens when you get a new addition to the flock. Later this morning, I mowed the games lawn and set the blade lower on the cylinder mower to get a closer cut and the lawn is looking its best so far. A rush to get away to Redland Aggregates headquarters where we were invited to a buffet lunch ahead of the official opening of the Paxton Pits Nature Reserve. We met all of the Redland Directors at the reception and the lady that was due to officiate at the opening – an actress from ‘Howard’s Way’.

It was still very hot today, but we enjoyed it and it made a success of the gravel pit opening. This afternoon, I relaxed in front of the TV for a while and then did some paperwork this evening. I stayed up very late to watch the European election results. I was disappointed to see the very poor showing of the Democrats who lost votes to the Greens but, with the unfair ‘first-past-the-post’ electoral system in the UK, neither party would get any seats! Labour won quite a few seats from the Tories as a disapproval of Mrs Thatcher’s anti-European stance. The crisis of the Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses anti-Muslim book has returned, with mass protests and now a legal action against its publication.
