I was still suffering and so stayed in to work on preparing my Focus delivery rounds but Della was a little better this morning but might have to miss the school play. Mr Larkin was on his much-improved work boat. The blizzards that had stopped the motorway and railway networks in the Midlands and North gave way to sleet and snow and Lech Walensa, the former Solidarity leader, won the Polish presidential election
I was still suffering this morning but Della, whilst still ill, seems to be less distressed than yesterday. Diana went into the local school to tell Della's teacher that our little daughter is still unwell and will probably not be able to perform in the school play this week which is a pity. She also went off shopping and I was angry with her when she got back because she would not help me in with logs and I had to go out in the cold unwell myself. I eventually found out that it was the spiders that was worrying her.

Mr Larkin was here early today and moved his boat off and started work. His new boat is much bigger and better than his old one and seems well-founded for the dredging as well as the piling work that he does. I heard from Sue Sutton who was previously thinking of coming over this morning and from Percy who had the FOCUS collection in hand. Also from Ian James who had been asked by John Cresswell to put tomorrow's ON-SITE Training Board Meeting back but, after discussion, we decided to go ahead with it on time as arranged in the better interests of the company. Arrangements had been made to meet the staff afterwards and I did not want to change these; or to meet them beforehand when we would not know the company circumstances of what message to give them.
The blizzards that had been stopping the motorway and railway networks in the Midlands and North have given way this morning to sleet and snow; but not before at least a half dozen deaths had occurred of people stranded or delayed for medical treatment. Lech Walensa, the former Solidarity leader, has won the Polish presidential election against the opposition of an unknown emigre foreigner who was rumoured to be a front man for the Secret Service. All this sounded a bit far-fetched to me and he was left claiming "foul" as his campaign had been thus discredited.
I worked on my diary this morning and then got back to FOCUS planning and Christmas Cards this afternoon. I was not able to do very well with my Christmas card text. The problem is following last year's message which was so brilliant and, now that Thatcher is gone and nobody knows what to expect of John Major, it is too early to send the next message. Later this afternoon, Percy brought round my FOCUS's and I spent most of the evening adding the inserts and then counting and bundling the leaflets for my new delivery rounds. I went out later and got the first three rounds in the hands of my deliverers. I sent my apologies to this evening's Contract Services Committee through poor health and lack of priority for what is a really vacuous responsibility. Far more important to get my FOCUS leaflets delivered.
