I started this busy day very early, completing my chores before breakfast so tat I could spend the day creating the set of FOCUS newsletters but I did not manage to complete this very difficult task, and watching World Cup football on the TV did not help. Being a chiller day, a lit a log fire in my office. Daniel had three Physics "A"-level examinations today and Debbie went to Guides this evening for her enrolment.

I knew that I had a busy day ahead and so I rose early and tended the conservatory, fish and doves so I could be clear of all that before breakfast. I spent the whole day progressing my FOCUS work. For some of the time I was fully pre-occupied with this and, for the rest, I was watching the TV World Cup Football at the same time. In this latter case, I hardly made much progress, but I could not work continually at the computer screen with no break. As far as the FOCUS's were concerned, I finished the common central section and two of the four back-and-front sets of text to cover half of the wards that we had to circulate with the leaflet. This afternoon's match was the first for Scotland in the World Cup Finals and they lost to a poor team who played negative tactics and then had a single goal-scoring effort go in to the horror of the "Tartan Army" of followers. England's first match this evening was a torrid affair against Ireland with the latter booting and heading the ball up in the air all the time in a swirling wind to negate the better English Footballing skills. It ended as a 1-1 draw with an English Penalty disallowed which seemed unfair on our side.

Today, Daniel had three Physics "A"-level examinations and found one easy but another hard as they featured the topic of electromagnetic fields which had not featured in his revision. Debbie went to Guides this evening for her enrolment and got some badges now that she is in the pack proper. Little Della ended up in the doghouse because she took some playthings into my conservatory and they fell to the bottom of my pond and I had to come with a net and fish them out. It became obvious later today that I was not going to manage to finish the FOCUS's this evening and so I got a stay of execution of one more day from the printers. I therefore went to bed at a reasonable time. The weather has turned chillier again and so I had the log fire burning in my office to cheer me up as well as keep me warm.
The Norwegian super-tanker aground 57 miles off Galveston, Texas, is still burning fiercely with its cargo of 38 million gallons of oil seeping out. The fire is burning off most of the spillage at the moment, but the tanker is sinking and a huge environmental disaster seems to be occurring. Shell have suspended all shipments to US ports as its insurers warn of huge liability claims. Former US Admiral Poindexter, a former Reagan right-hand man, has been jailed for 6 months for perjury and false evidence to Congress and the police over the Iran/Contra Affair. More financial services firms are in trouble as Barclays announces that it will have to write off £100m in respect of B.& C. losses; but still the pound sterling and UK stock market surges ahead as the Financial Times carries a story that the government are now planning an entry of Sterling into the ERM of the EMS this Autumn.
