On a very warm day, for the second day running and near record temperatures for October, I was up early again, off to Jewson’s to buy some timber and then welcomed Jeckells who quoted for a new canopy for Paxton Princess and a hood for The Jolly and then working all morning on the second side of the garage.
I stayed later as the weather was good and then called both Mum and Di on the car telephone and dropped in to see Mum at 8.00pm for an hour or so and we had a very good chat.
John Major was the hero at the Tory party conference for making the show better with his EMS timing but the Home Secretary was caught drinking and driving by the local police and now has to resign
I was awake early again and had breakfast and a bath before getting dressed. I was hoping that Jeckells would come later and so I popped out early to Jewson’s to get the timber that I wanted. I needed a piece of three by four-and-a-half inch timber to replace the bottom of the door-post and some more general timber for further work on the garage. Whilst at Jewson’s, I had a look at the saws and got myself another as my other one was going blunt. It is a "hard-point", which is a type of saw that is less-easily blunted but cannot be sharpened afterwards in this disposable society of ours! I was back by 9.00am and then worked all morning on the second side of the garage making good but slow progress. At midday, I went in for a pot of tea and some sandwiches and had just eaten them when the Jeckells man arrived.

After an early start, a nice bath and some Bran Flakes, I called home and then started work restoring the garage wall when Jack arrived for a chat and I rewarded and thanked him for looking after Daniel the other day. By surprise, Dan called in today for some money, had settled in well at the UEA and helped me pull The Paxton Princess into the boat dock and mode a fridge.
Shocked at lunchtime to find a favourite shop, Excel, burnt down from an electrical fault. To Coltishall for an architect’s meeting about rebuilding Heronshaw and back to work all evening on the garage after enjoying some shrimps for tea
I was awake early and raring to go. I had put on the Heronshaw electric storage heating and it was belting out heat. I had a morning cup of tea and breakfast of Oat Bran Flakes and then enjoyed a nice deep bath before getting dressed. I could not find the power cable for my Mitsubishi cellular telephone and so I had to keep the 'phone switched off and make occasional calls home and I made just such a call before going out to work at 8.00am. I worked on restoring the rear corner wall of the garage, completing the section by 10.00am after which Jack came and I was delayed somewhat by the need to chat to him as a courtesy. It is sad to see him still being restricted by his rupture injury and I think that they should operate to improve his quality of life. He and Dolly had come down to mow Mrs Vincent's bit of lawn next door, which they did, and I gave Jack another £20 for looking after my place. In particular, I was glad that he had attended the bungalow and let Daniel in the other day and also re-moored my boat when it had evidently come slightly adrift in the wind.

I was tired and thus delayed getting ready to travel to Horning for a few days and Di stayed in to see me off, missing the chance to see her parents in Cambridge for lunch and so I took her out to The Little Chef before leaving. After a congested journey, I found that Daniel had left Heronshaw a little untidy, and used my sleeping bag, but it was otherwise fine. T
he river level was up and so I cleared the vegetation around the boat dock ready for The Paxton Princess in before going in and enjoying a hot chocolate and then tired to bed.
I had to finish a few things off this morning and then prepared for a couple of days at Horning. I was sluggish and feeling the effects of a very tiring few days and only just got down in time to have breakfast with the rest of the family. I completed my domestic chores and then went to my office to finish off some paperwork. Poor Diana was hoping to go to Cambridge to shop and see her parents but my delay in leaving meant that she had to be here to see me off. By coffee time, I had finished more correspondence and cleared my desk and I opted to have my morning drink with Diana in her ironing room. I was watching the Stock Exchange this morning and the new-found fascination with the EMS did not last long as shares began to sink back again. It still took me over an hour to get ready to go but I also sorted out a lot of tools, nuts, bolts etc so as to be able to take them with me.

An early start hosting Derek Giles and then Percy Meyer with alterations and corrections for the late-night Focus editions which had to be fitted in between my chores and the work of the decorators all morning. Then the resultant press release followed, until it was all done and sent off.
News of first the pound and shares soaring but then falling back to record a gain that was useful but not decisive. Israel has killed 22 Palestinians in the occupied territories in a use of force that was in excess of that needed and the West have now to be seen to be fair handed when such troubles occur
A little bit of lay in this morning but not much. I had hoped to sleep in and had left a note for Di accordingly, but I woke up on time in the end. Derek Giles had come round early as I had not left a copy of his own FOCUS back page. I was still in my dressing gown after eating breakfast and he had to take me as he found me. Once I had got dressed and was tending the swimming pool, Percy came round with his alterations, but he had to wait until I had completed my chores before I could sit down with him. We worked together all morning, correcting the text, and taking calls from our colleagues with their suggestions and improvements. We also prepared and issued a press release about the hardship of local house-owners and businesses to counter the ERM news from a local point of view.
