A quieter day in the office catching up before I could get back to laying out the next FOCUS newsletter as the rain poured down all morning. Then a little time outside raking leaves etc before attending a LibDem meeting at Sally’s this evening, with the emphasis on membership recruitment, where I also confided to colleagues that I might well not stand for re-election in 1992.
Home not too late to Di who had a very bad and depressing cold. The stock exchange is sliding again with the news that the US President and Congress cannot agree on a way to reduce the budget deficit
After a poor night for sleep, I had a much quieter day, catching up on necessary administration after hosting all of my visitors yesterday. I still had to take a number of telephone calls from the press and others and received a fax from the Onsite PR people to edit and approve. Then a lot of filing and sorting out of papers to do and the task of updating a couple of days journal before I could get back to the layout of the FOCUS newsletter. The day still started, as always, with my chores which are now wider and include sweeping up the host of leaves that are now falling. Squirrels are active amongst the oaks of our riverside garden collecting the acorns and they, as well as the wood pigeons and the wind, make sure that the leaves fall.

Five meetings today with various LibDem colleagues for Focus editorial, On-Site training PR and then two radio interviews. The unification of Germany that took place at midnight tonight.
The unification ceremony at the Brandenburg gate in its restored capital, Berlin, was a very emotional and nationalistic occasion, however, and tonight all Germans are celebrating. Germany is now a country of 79million people in 16 Länder or states, comprising 23% of the EEC population and 28% of its GNP
Another day of meetings with five in all throughout the day. But first I tended to the garden and conservatory as it all depends upon me these days. I had to sweep up all of the rear garden paving as the decorators had been messy and the leaves were now falling in sufficient quantity to foul the swimming pool. I met the decorators as they started work and asked them to try to be a bit tidier - particularly with their cigarette ends! To my office to prepare for my meetings next. I made a mistake with my journal data files and overwrote the September data which was sad but at least I printed it out first and may manage to re-enter it sometime in the future. I was all ready for the arrival of Margaret James from On-Site Training and Penny Miles from Cambridge P.R. to discuss publicising my new involvement with the company, when Michael and Sally arrived to work on their FOCUS copy and I had to set them up in the kitchen as I received my other guests in the office. We met for a couple of hours and went through my own personal career and background and then I moved the discussion on to what the company of On-Site needed to achieve in its P.R. activities; training enquiries for the existing franchises, franchise enquiries for the areas needed to complete the network, and then company and financial status as the main objectives rather than personal glorification based on my past involvement in the computer industry. There was, however, scope for drawing on my reputation to promote the company.

A Focus meeting with Sally Guinee of the Liberal Democrats, A computer Development meeting of the HDC and then a Little Paxton History talk to the local Guides as Daniel Leaves home for Norwich and the UEA.
Nigel Mansell, the British Motor racing driver deciding against retirement after all and opting to drive for the Williams team next year instead and the unification of Germany is now all set to go ahead tomorrow after the four wartime powers - USA, USSR, France and Britain - hold their last meeting and return sovereignty to the Germans.
It was always going to be a busy day, with Sally Guinee coming around in the morning, a meeting of the District Council in the afternoon and a talk about Little Paxton to the Guides this evening; but it turned out to be particularly so as Daniel also chose today to leave home and go up to Norfolk a couple of days early. He packed up all of his belongings into his car and, after lunch when I had time to see him, we gave him the first week's money and then waved goodbye. We only then found out that he had forgotten to take a Heronshaw key, but I telephoned ahead to Jack Edwards to leave him a message to meet him there. A poignant time but at least he is only going to Norfolk where we can easily see him at Heronshaw.
