Michael Watson Boxing Tragedy
Michael Watson Boxing Tragedy

Working at home on a sharply cooler and fresher day but still fine and sunny after some overnight rain tending the garden, the fish and the doves and then writing and planning an election meeting.  Then watching the Portugese Grand Prix at Estoril and finally witnessing the Michael Watson Boxing Tragedy.

I was very late to bed last night and even later to sleep as my mind was still active on election issues. I had finished my evening by watching a world title boxing fight between the repugnant Chis Eubank and the "good guy" Michael Watson. Watson had taken the fight to Eubank for just about all of the first ten rounds and then, in the eleventh, knocked down Chris Eubank for the first time in Eubank's career. He was then knocked down himself and at the end of the round and got up but could not recover in time during the break to defend himself properly at the start of the last round and the fight was stopped in favour of Chris Eubank with the crowd literally up in arms. However the referee was the better judge that the rest of us because Watson soon collapsed and was operated on this morning with a blood clot in the brain after a severe injury to the back of his head.

He had hit the back of his head as he went down. Also Eubank had to go to hospital before being released with exhaustion. All very distressing. I was still up early this morning and Diana brought her drink upstairs to join me in bed and we chatted a while before getting up and dressed. It was sharply cooler and fresher today but still fine and sunny after some overnight rain. I fed the fish and watered the conservatory plants before feeding the doves. The young white fantail dove was out and about today and I threw him back up on to the ledge. A nice fried breakfast which I ate with a bit of a conscience as I am still weighing in at around 14st 6lbs, some half a stone above my target.

This morning, I started updating this last few days journal and also called my election colleagues to plan next Tuesday's meeting at Glisson Road. This afternoon, I finished off this job and then relaxed for a while watching the Portugese Grand Prix at Estoril which had Nigel Mansell out in front in his Williams and seeming to be taking many points off McLaren driver Ayreton Senna's driver's championship lead until he was "black-flagged" or disqualified. This followed an incident where one of his wheels fell off after a tyre change and he got illegal assistance out of his pit box. Not a very good 24hr's sport! Updated my journal this evening before turning in.
