Spending the day modifying and completing my plans for the Building Control Officer and then compiling letters and leaflet articles to try and improve my LibDem colleagues’ prospects for the forthcoming local elections.
Today was spent almost entirely on preparing for my important meeting tomorrow with the building control officer, but I also spared time to compose and prepare two letters for use as a target mailing in the Paxton election campaign. One was straightforward enough, attempting to squeeze the Labour vote to beat the Tories, but the other was more innovative, being sent to "probable" and "undecided" voters, promoting John Brown in contrast to Tory Nichola Kay and trying to develop his "local" credentials to counter her actually living in the village. I also tied the future of "FOCUS" to that of his own. I had to do this as her simple message was hitting home and our support was ebbing away.

I also checked and modified another key target letter for John Roscoe to use in Eaton Ford as we had to do something there to change what appeared to be a bed-rock of Tory support. Even though the Tory, Bill Longford, had not even put around a leaflet yet and did not appear to be doing any canvassing, we were still finding a majority of people (who did not even know his name) who were prepared to vote for him. Our target letters were designed to expose his lack of courtesy and service and to list "ten points" of criticism; a tactic that could backfire for being negative but that was also capable of moving the foundations of their support. This done and under-way, I then turned to my building plans and painstakingly typed up and refined my overall letter of response and then re-drew all of the plans to show as much of the new detail as possible. The trouble was that I ran out of time and had to stay up to around 3.00am in the morning to get the job done which I could have done with out. To bed, after leaving a note for Diana so as to know when to call me.
