Experiencing a few problems upon arriving back home and then to take Debbie horse-riding and a walk around Paxton Pits as the Queen Mum is admitted to hospital, The Head of MI5 is revealed as a Russian spy and the Tamil ‘boat people’ were smuggled from Hamburg where there have been arrests. US President Reagan now has both Houses of Congress supporting sanctions against South Africa as four blacks are shot there and Rolls Royce get the BA 747 engine order and 7 climbers are feared lost on the "K2 mountain”
A long lay in and needed to be quick to have breakfast and still be ready to let Joan in for cleaning at 9.00am. Out to the doves, where I find that two of the three latest chicks are lost to the cats and that somebody has thrown a rock from the footpath to break my shed window. Not an ideal homecoming. Got Daniel to help me clean out and commission the swimming pool, but was left to do it myself in the end, as he took off to find his friends.

Last day at the hotel listening to the troubles of the owner before letting Di take a trip to the Pleasure beach amusement park, booking some ‘horsey’ rides for the girls, as I made a ‘heritage’ walk around Yarmouth, visiting the Toll House museum until I took my own car out to Horsey to catch up on some family holiday memories and then I collected the family at Joyland amusement park and spent the rest of the day enjoying ourselves culminating in a swimming session at The Marina centre before me making the long and late drive home
We all slept well and started the day a little later, getting down to breakfast well after the starting time but, fortunately, still before the rush. It was noticeable that the other guests get later as well as the week goes on! A dry, but misty, start to the day and quite warm, in spite of a breeze. We then packed up our bags and, as Di finished the task, I took certain of them down to the car. Eventually complete and I settled the bill and spoke to our host. An outwardly humorous, but quite troubled man, his son being threatened at the moment for ‘shopping’ some of his mates for a robbery and attack on a local establishment. I asked why the Burlington and Palm Court Hotels were kept with their separate identities, and it seems that it helps to keep coach parties separate from day and weekly guests and also he has an eye to retirement, when he can get better value from someone to take over if they are offered as a manageable and affordable size.

The drive from Great Yarmouth to Wroxham on a very popular day for boating and to hire a day-boat to cruise through Wroxham Broad, Salhouse and then to stop at Horning for lunch before back home again as 152 Sri Lankan refugees are picked up off of Canada with investigation started as to where they came from. The UK is disappointed over Botha’s intransigence, misses out on extradition of Republicans from Dublin and the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall was marked today
Slept OK again and Daniel and Della slept on until it was nearly time for breakfast. The rest of us made up for it and we still managed to get down by 8.00am. Today we hurried out to the car afterwards and drove to Wroxham on a fine and sunny day. The Fineway electric cruisers were all taken and so were the others close by, but we went to the other side of Wroxham Bridge and found a boat free at Loynes. It cost a rather expensive £38 per day, but the crowds were growing and the day-boats disappearing fast.

A further day in Great Yarmouth enjoying the beach and then taking Mr Wells’ Glenda Margaret to the Scroby Sands before back to the Palm Court swimming pool and an evening walking along Market and Broad Row before back to the hotel for some fun and games before bedtime. The news is of Botha defying the sanctions threats against South African apartheid and that this area should stay free of rain and stay dry tomorrow
I did not hear Di as she made the morning drinks and only awoke as she gave me my morning tea. A fair night, considering the shortness and softness of the bed and the rather musty smell of the pillow and mattress. A mad scrabble getting the kids ready for breakfast, but down by 8.00am for the start of the meal. A fine day, with a mixture of cloud and sun and, even with a breeze to cool us, it was warm enough for a day on the beach.
