Visit to Bedford with the family and a look at Peacock’s auction and then home after viewing a nearby field but neither of interest as I resume work on The Lady after some tennis on our lawn with Daniel playing and Della fielding before he and his friends worry Diana by flirting with the girls who have come to swim. More Commonwealth Games boycotts as Thatcher resists South African sanctions and is more preoccupied with reducing inflation beyond its current 2.5% and the marching and conflict season is underway in Ulser again
Another restless night, feeling a bit warm and uncomfortable in bed. Sat groggily with my morning tea for a while and then got up to wash my hair, as well as shower and shave. Thus down late to breakfast and unable to eat my boiled egg, so I had cereal instead. Dressed in sports jacket and trousers, because after reading today’s paper and mail, I set off to Bedford with all the family, except Debbie, who is still at school.

Another tiring time working on Lady Martina after a family breakfast and then joining Daniel and friends in the swimming pool after he helps me with cleaning the tiles as Dr Wendy Savage is cleared of charges against her and pressure from all quarters is trained on Thatcher over South African sanctions
A troubled night, worrying about a silly dream and then restless in the early hours, driving Diana into the spare room. Showered and down to a nice breakfast of warm croissants, making sure that the children tidied up their rooms before they had theirs. Daniel off to his last morning at school this term and then I settled down to The Lady again.

More work on The Lady as Diana comforts Linda, still torn with her dilemma, and the children have friends around to play and swim in the pool. The Thatcher government reaps their rewards over being obstructive to action on South Africa, ‘Boy’ George is held over heroin charges and bomb attacks kill victims in France, Germany and Ulster
Slept well and was fully rested by the time that my morning tea arrived. Showered and dressed for more work on The Lady and, after feeding the ever hungry doves, I made a start. I smoothed down yesterday’s varnishing with a damp sanding sponge and then, turning the boat round so that side dried in the sun, I scraped down the problem parts of the starboard side. Morning coffee after the first coat of varnish and then to my office to return yesterday’s calls from Vinters and Whitmarsh Sterland and settle a few queries on my land purchase and tax affairs.

Another day working on The Lady as Diana hosts a party for Della and friends and we are grateful for the news that Linda had decided against the abortion and me that the Church had deferred a divisive debate on the appointment of women priests
Awake to a dull morning, as the hot weather of late broke a little. Breakfast of wheat flakes with the children, then showered and shaved, before dressing for more work on the boat. I had decided against a trip to Cambridge today and, anyway, Di had arranged a party for Della and friends. I left The Lady covered through most of the showers and removed a section of the rear channel on the port side, clearing out the filler and other debris from behind, which was quite damp again.
