US were still trying to depose Saddam Hussein in March 1991

A full working day at the Cambridge LibDems Glisson Road building folding election addresses and printing out canvas cards and posters with the help of Percy and Keith after which Percy took them back to Michael and Derek for sorting into bundles for our St Neots area deliverers. Sally and us were organised and preparing for our holiday break away.

Interest rates need to fall further as another travel firm goes bust and ABTA’s guarantee fund is stretched and the US were still trying to depose Saddam Hussein but the UN has lifted the food embargo on Iraq

I had planned to be at the Liberal Democrats building this morning, but this turned out to be a full working day. I was up quite early, did a few things before leaving the house and was gone before the gardener arrived. Diana asked him to do the chores for me. Early at Histon where I collected the printing and took it across to Glisson Road. Percy and Keith were already there and started the job of folding those election addresses as I organised the photocopying of the balance of the posters for the election campaign. There was no sign of John Matthewman and, following a telephone call to him to find out what was happening, he arrived much later at lunchtime with the disks that contained the data for the St Neots Canvas Card printouts. I therefore had to spend all afternoon at the computer printing them out. The rest of our printing was ready by lunchtime and so I gave a reluctant Percy the task of taking this back to Michael and Derek so that they could bundle the election leaflets up together and get them to the deliverers in good time for the weekend.

I just managed to get the canvas cards delivered by the same route by teatime and then spent this evening at home. I incorporated the suggested changes to my first draft of the second election leaflet and then broke off for an early night to recover after the days' stress and exertions. There are many lessons to learn about making Glisson more effective, but these will wait until after the elections. Today was a bit colder than of late with the breeze coming from the north. The holiday tickets arrived (which was a relief) and Sally left with her family for a month's holiday in Australia to see her sister and family. This put a bit of strain on our election plans, particularly as her husband is a candidate as well, but could not be avoided. Also, Sally has planned for her absence very carefully and has lists for everything. The Treasury organise another half-percent drop in interest rates but the stock exchange wanted more, and shares fell on the news. Another travel firm goes bust and ABTA, the agent’s association, is stretched with their guarantee fund being almost depleted as a result. The US are still trying to depose Saddam Hussein by covert means as the formal confirmation of cease-fire has yet to be agreed. They down a second Iraqi plane inside Iraq which was trying to restore the territory to Saddam's control. Meanwhile the UN has lifted the food embargo on that country, but the rest of the blockade remains.
