Lord Carrington's appeal for a cease-fire in Yugoslavia
Lord Carrington's appeal for a cease-fire in Yugoslavia

A slightly chilly autumnal edge to the latest warm and sunny day doing my usual chores and then enjoyed the morning air by the river. Small roach, rudd; a medium-sized perch and some chub of all sizes which could be easily seen now amongst the reeds.

A visit to the gypsies at Samuel Jones and then some televised cricket and World Featherweight Boxing before taking Di to the cinema in Bedford.

The news is of the EEC-sponsored peace talks for Yugoslavia stalling as both Croations and Serbs continuing the fighting and ignore chairman Lord Carrington's appeal for a cease-fire.

As ever the day was warm and sunny; but there is increasingly an autumnal chill to the air first thing in the morning and we woke up quite cold in bed this morning. After breakfast, I did my usual chores and then enjoyed the morning air by the river. There were so many fish to be seen amongst the reeds. Small roach, rudd; a medium-sized perch and some chub of all sizes which could be easily seen now that the water is gin clear. There was quite a lot of mail and interesting papers to read, and it was some time before I had finished and then I had some transactions to do.

In late morning, I popped into St Neots to put a film in for development and also to do some building society transactions. On the way home, I went to the Samuel Jones premises and had another word with the security guard and found out that nothing had happened since last night - no further caravans and no more police presence. I found out that they had not made a note of any registration numbers and so got permission to go across and take some photographs and write down the numbers. I avoided any argument and just got the information that we needed and at least the Gypsies felt my presence and must wonder who I was. Funny to see how two children stood in front of a man's lorry to hide the number and their father asked if I wanted his name and then gave me "James Bond - 007". I remarked that he had the wrong registration number in that case!

Home for lunch and then I relaxed this afternoon, watching the one-day club cricket final on the television (Hampshire narrowly beating Surrey) until we had an early tea. Then I took Diana to Bedford to see a rather violent and very black film about the fight against drug trafficking which I enjoyed but which Diana found too much. Once home, we both watched the second episode of our favourite serial - The Elliott Sisters - and then we had our drinks and vacated the lounge to Daniel, Angela and his friends. One of the Garys had brought along a very attractive girlfriend and the company was thus enriched.

Then Di went to bed as I watched Irishman Dave Macauley successfully defend his World Featherweight Boxing Championship against a black South Africa Sowetan of less than 5ft height.
