On going to bed last night, I was in some discomfort and agony with an acute stomach upset after eating all of those chocolates and made several urgent trips to the toilet before Diana left for the peace of the spare room and I eventually managed to settle down and get off to sleep. I was very weak this morning and so stayed in bed and read my books on gun-dogs until lunchtime when I had recovered enough to get up, washed and dressed for a light lunch. I rested again this afternoon tuning in to the House of Commons statement by Michael Heseltine on the pits crisis.

It was fascinating spectacle during which the government performed a 'U'-turn of policy by restricting the immediate closure programme to ten pits with a stay of execution for the remainder. Even though this might be sufficient to reverse the voting intentions of enough Tory M.P.'s and to possibly secure a majority for the government on Wednesday, it has failed to satisfy the country with no plans for independent study or scrutiny of the financial case; nor heralds the adoption of any long-term energy policy.
