The gun shop of Jimmy Ling in Hoxne
The gun shop of Jimmy Ling in Hoxne

The trip to collect my new rifles from Ling and back home to gather the Service Sheets for my Dad’s funeral and then walking Sam on the Common.

I was hoping to hear from Nigel first thing this morning as he was going to let me know whether he could come with me to Ling of Hoxne to pick up my rifles. I still had first to go out with Sam and had got off to a late start as I was not in time to accompany the girls to the bus stop. By the time I got back it was just before 9.00am, Diana had gone off shopping and once I had got some more cash from town and managed to contact Nigel; it was half an hour later and he could not come. The journey went quite well until I got to the Diss area where the roads were all up and diversions were in place.

Under new EEC rules, many of the British bridges seem to need strengthening and the disruption is something to be seen. I took Sam with me, and he was good on the journey but got a little impatient after four hours in the car! I got to my firearms dealer, bought my two rifles and some ammunition, and then set off back, pulling on to a "green lane" by-way near Stanton with my Range Rover and letting Sam out for a drink and some exercise. I had called Freda on the car telephone but there was no real need to go in and see her and I also gave my parents' home a miss, not wanting to go unless I had to. Lunch was a bacon roll and mars bar from a road-side kiosk.

Once home, I worked on the service sheet for the funeral and finished copying and assembling 75 of them by bedtime. It seems that we are going to get some 50 or so people for the funeral which is not so bad. More work on the will so that now all of the necessary people have been notified. Later today, the rain came, and I got quite soaked whilst walking the dog on St Neots Common. I was introducing Sam to the local rabbit population, and they were numerous over there. It seems that Myxomatosis is a spent force and thank goodness for that.
