A morning creating press releases and then the afternoon fielding press telephone calls but also hearing sad news of our cleaner Jone’s father dying as she sits by his bedside. This evening attending the HDC Leisure and Amenity committee meeting about the designation of Paxton Pits as a nature reserve where they welcomed my interest and made me their representative on the St Neots Museum Society committee. French stock-market scandal mounts and one with Barlow-Clowes PLC as the UK stock exchange reaches post-October highs but poor news of British soccer hooligans rampaging around Düsseldorf on the eve of their match versus Holland
A sound night’s sleep, after which I drank my morning tea and still had plenty of time to get washed and dressed for breakfast. A nice warm and sunny day today as we sent the children off to school – both for examinations. I spent this morning writing up press releases on the conclusions of the Economic Development Committee – publicising the scheme to exclude the public from Pathfinder House car park and give notice to the tenants of Castle Hill House. Soon time for lunch. Diana opted to stay in this area today. With Joan by her father’s bedside, who is dying, there was more space and chores to do at home and so Diana did not go to Cambridge today. This afternoon I did a lot more correspondence and even had a call from the HCN Express about my newsletter press release, which was rewarding, as I think they will be printing something on it. After tea I fed the birds and then got changed to race off to the Leisure & Amenities Committee meeting.

I tried sailing on the river this morning on a sunny and warm day then came in to prepare for my economic development committee meeting and helped Diana receive two dozen brownies who had come to use our swimming pool. At the EDC meeting, I opposed excluding the public to the council office car park without success. Thatcher is upset today at the lack of an Irish extradition for a terrorist suspect, South Africa’s Supreme Court refuses to open the case of the Sharpeville Six despite prosecution witness torture and the French socialists win most deputies in their election
A good night’s sleep and then fairly early and active start to the day. I made myself more French toast for breakfast and then spent the day at home. Went through my morning reading of the papers and mail and then set up the sailing dingy and tried using the wind to sail up and down the length of the river to see if it could be done. It was a fine, sunny and warm day today and not very conducive to work. Lunch of salad and then this afternoon I typed up a summary of my intended contribution to this evening’s Economic Development Committee and then printed it out.

A pleasant trip to visit the John and Brenda Tomlin and family in St Albans after some time working on council topics, managing my livestock and then watching televised football later as football results and fan behaviour dominates the news.
Went to bed on time, but it was an hour or two before I could get off to sleep in the end. Up eventually after a lay in and my Sunday fried breakfast. After the recent country dancing, I was only weighing 13 stone 1 lbs, which is very good. First thing this morning, I worked at my desk, typing up an amended document on sewage disposal problems that took into account the results of my meeting with the Technical Officers. This took a long time. Punctuated by my livestock husbandry and telephone conversations with Mike Pope and Mark Slater. Unfortunately, Mark (the only Labour man on St Neots District Council) will be away for the Economic Development Committee meeting and then the Southern Area Consultative Committee meeting as well and so I will not get much support from that direction! Soon time for lunch, then all into the car for the long trip to St Albans to see the Tomblin family.

Some family time before success in getting my items on the HDC agenda and then a pleasant afternoon at Little Paxton School fete where Debbie could meet and interact with her old school friends before some time with Mike Pope and my reading and journal. A British –flagged Esso ship being attacked by Iranian gunboats in the Gulf, The Labour Party is now having its leadership election and England’s football youth supporters are in Europe and behaving disgracefully
We lay late in bed sleeping after our late night and repelled all boarding children until after 9.00am. I have taken to having ‘french toast’, which is a grilled bread & butter sandwich. I used to have this as a child and I now have to make it for myself. Daniel says his physics exam yesterday was ‘remedial’; his form of abuse for standards so low that you would have to be of poor accomplishment to fail it. Took some time reading my mail and other things, before going out to feed the ducks and doves and survey for moles (no sign of any). Then I came in for a coffee and wrote up yesterday’s journal. I had managed to get the Leisure & Amenity Chairman (Joyce Day) to agree for me to talk to the Paxton Pits item on the L&A agenda next week, even though I am not on the committee, which is good. Also my two suggestions for the Consultative Group Committee have been accepted. In late morning today, I locked up the house and we all walked to Little Paxton School for the School Association Fete.
