I spent this morning working on my Council business until, after lunch, I turned to campaigning, printing out some press releases for Percy to deliver and then sorting out the delivery rounds for my FOCUS newsletters. Inflation has risen above 6% today, three Zimbabwe men are sentenced to death for a bomb attack on the ANC and on the other side of the border in South Africa, three anti-apartheid leaders may face death also
I slept well enough but was awake early and ended the night with ‘cat-naps’. Up, shaved and showered but made myself late for breakfast and ate alone whilst reading the paper. The conservatory fitters have all but finished the job today and sealed it up and fitted all of the glass and doors with just a few cosmetics left for the morning. They used quantities of lead to seal it to the house etc. I worked in my office this morning on Council business. I telephoned through a couple of items for the Southern Area Committee Meeting agenda and then spoke to the Planning Director, David Potter, about the Ombudsman complaint and the Riversfield planning application. I edited my report of the Council Meeting as well. After lunch, Percy came round and we printed out and collated our press releases together and then he took them away for posting and hand delivery.

I was up and working today despite tiredness reading my planning papers whilst keeping an eye on the installation of the conservatory underfloor heating. I took Debbie for her riding lesson today and watched her do well with a good pony. A more relaxed evening tonight with just the TV, my journal and a few chores before to bed at 10pm. Benazir Bhutto retains her power in Pakistan, Thatcher was with Bush and Quayle today and two men have been charged for the murder of the two army corporals at the IRA funeral. Record falls in unemployment are only achieved by taking young people out of the figures.
I was tired last night and again this morning but was still up on time to drink my morning tea and make sure Di stepped on the scales. She has thankfully lost a few pounds and may be on the way down again. Breakfast and then I kept my eye on the installation of the underfloor heating pipes this morning as the had to tie in with the conservatory installation. I sat in the lounge, read the planning papers for next Monday’s meeting and watch them as well. Lunch at home and then, this afternoon, I typed up a report of last night’s Council meeting. I heard from Marion Woodbridge today in the form of an invitation to dinner one day soon. She told me how to Tory members on the Huntingdon Health Authority were moaning about my questions and meeting delays yesterday. It seems that Councillor Mrs Ruth Clapham had to go all that time without a cigarette, poor thing!! Marion was pleased! I took Debbie to a riding lesson tonight and stayed to watch this time. She rode well on a sympathetic pony.

Full Council day - I was very tired after a very late night but still worked this morning organising files into folders on my Apple Mac as the conservatory erectors fitted most of the glass. After lunch with Di and Della, I drove off to Pathfinder House for my Full Council Meeting where, together with the Labour members, we held the Tories to account in The meeting going until 7 PM. President Reagan and Mrs Thatcher enjoying a banquet and much ceremonial in a bout of mutual admiration which extended to new President Bush. Benazir Bhutto wins the Pakistan national election and a judicial review delays the Ulster inquest
Was appallingly late to bed last night for no good reason, other than I was wanting to relax after all of the work on my notes for today’s council meeting. A bit tired with a headache this morning as a result and that to take a couple of aspirins later which did the trick. This morning, I recovered the rest of my diskettes from Bill Walston and I worked for a couple of hours transferring them around and putting them in local groupings of folders. This took me until nearly 12 midday and I had to rush round, tending the ducks and doves and then changing ready to go out. First with the wife and Della to the little chef for lunch and then I drove on to Pathfinder House for my Full Council Meeting. It started at 2:30 PM, and normally ends at 5 PM but because of numerous questions and comments from me and the Labour members; it when on until 7 PM.

The conservatory erectors arrived late in freezing fog after a cold night but installed flashing and glass for the impressive lantern as the day became quite warm and sunny. Working all day on my District Council meeting preparations, conspiring with Labour leader Jim Lomax to be effective tomorrow. A challenging St Neots SLD Committee meeting this evening, driving things forward, before turning down an invitation from the Huntingdon chairman to stand for the County Council Elections next May. Thatcher rushes over to see the outgoing and incoming US presidents to outflank the Europeans and pressure mounts for a judicial review on the ‘Shoot to Kill‘ hearings as nurses make progress with their regrading demands. A Palestinian olive branch proposal for compromise is rejected by the new extreme Israeli government.
A cold night and freezing fog this morning that took some time to clear and warm up. The conservatory erectors were slow to arrive today, but made progress in installing the lead flashing and glass for the lantern which was quite impressive. I worked all day on my preparations for tomorrow’s District Council meeting, typing in my comments onto the word processor so as to be able to keep track in the meeting itself. I made a call to the Labour Leader, Jim Lomax, and agreed a course of action for tomorrow that will keep opposition and questions/comments at a high and sustained level all afternoon and so the Tories will wonder what hit them! The weather became quite warm and sunny in the end and the grass continues to grow slowly and cover the thick layer of top dressing that I had applied. This evening, I went to the St Neots SLD Committee meeting and it was quite difficult but successful.
