I watched over the return of the conservatory builders today to screed the floor and helped them get over some difficulty over supplies and then took the family to the Village Hall ‘November Fayre’ after our family Beefeater lunch and then finished up at a well-attended RSPB film and family night
I slept particularly soundly after last night’s bedtime frolic with Diana. I was a bit slow to get up this morning, missing breakfast with the others and I was a bit disoriented by the delivery of ‘today’s’ newspaper which was actually yesterday’s Financial Times. I was half way through reading it before realising the news was a day late!! The builders arrived in the form of the floor laying subcontractors who laid about 5 inches of screed during the day and tidied up the conservatory as a result. The trouble was that they were quite messy in Willow Close; leaving piles of sand and semi-mixed concrete screed everywhere. The job was longer than they thought, needed more material, and I had to lend them £20 plus to go and buy another half a cubic yard of sharp sand and two bags of cement in view of the volume required. I watch their progress until lunch, when we had to collect Daniel and his friend Gary Skinner from St Neots and take them to lunch at the Beefeater. Then on to the Village Hall ‘November Fayre’ where each Little Paxton Hall user had a stall and raised money for both themselves and the Hall together by selling things.

I was up early to overview the latest work of the builders, who did well setting the remaining coping stones around the pool but the plumber’s efforts were disastrous damaging alarm wires and achieving very little. I followed up by screwing down all of the floorboards and relaying the carpets. This evening to watch a wartime suspense film with Diana and watch the TV pictures of the dreadful foggy weather that had led to deaths and injuries on the roads today and hear of the record trade balance deficit which hit the flagging pound sterling.
I slept all right but woke up very early and so got showered and dressed early as well. I tidied my room a little to pass the time until breakfast and sorted out some papers concerning outstanding bills. The builders and plumbers arrived to work today and set the remaining coping stones around the edge of the pool and took all day to do it the plumber spent all day putting a couple of bends on the pipes did more damage than good. He put his auger bit of the drill through my alarm wires; and then chiselled a severed why are so short I could hardly connect it to repair the system. I was rather upset with him as it cost me at least two hours. At least I could connect the new alarm wire into the into the circuit whilst all of the floorboards were up. I also screwed down all of the floorboards today, relayed the carpets and was quite pleased about how well they went back.

After a cold night, the builders and electricians/plumber worked all day fitting my pond liner and starting to put the curb stones around two sections of conservatory pond. Good coverage for my activities in the local press and a number of phone calls received after my focus newsletter distribution, which I followed up, before spending the rest of the evening at a Priory Doom meeting. The Chancellor announces more pension increases in response to some recent criticism about considering means testing. Nelson Mandela is giving more liberalised conditions for his South African political imprisonment.
I slept well on a cold night but was still a bit slow off the mark this morning. Breakfast of wheat flakes and then the morning paper. The builders were very busy today, keeping me occupied running around after them. I had to lend the electricians/plumber a circular saw for the floorboards and then I worked with him to watch the carpets being taken up in the guest’s bedroom and hallway. Then the fitting of my pond liner which turned out to be tailored perfectly to line the complicated shape. The plumber laid the pipes across the house, though he still had to connect the ends. I will have to re-lay the floorboards and carpets to my satisfaction. The builders filled the pond partially with water to set the liner firmly into place; and then started putting on the curb stones that hold in place.

There was much disruption today with plasterers, plumbers and electricians all working on the conservatory pool, pump, filter and electrics but I still spelling-checked my prehistoric history chapter and drew a diagram with a computer drawing tool before receiving a visit from Linda to brief her about being a parish councillor. This evening with Percy to a Southoe Parish Meeting and home in good time to write my journal
Slept well and woke early this morning. Just French Toast for breakfast and then I read the morning paper before settling down to do some work. I was constantly interrupted today with the plasterers on site and rendering the pool and the plumber/electricians setting out the pump, filter and the electrics. I still spelling-checked the text on Prehistoric History before lunch. This afternoon, I received a visit from Linda, Diana’s friend, who wanted to hear about being a Parish Councillor now that she has been co-opted.
