After a little disturbance, we had breakfast and were shocked at the state of The Lady and so I got Debbie to help me sweep the decks and to clean the whole. Then ashore in Daniel’s boat to the Broads Information Centre and afterwards to the Granary Restaurant for lunch. A visit with Di to the Ranworth Broad conservation centre and then back on The Lady for a trip up the Bure to Wroxham, meeting the Bloom family again before a visit to see the Geo Smith day boats and to bed mulling over our options for a change of boat
Eventually the neighbourhood noise calmed down last night and we got off to sleep, but we awoke early to the sound of some very noisy semi-wild geese on another hot morning. We had breakfast and, shocked by the way in which The Lady had become soiled during the last week two weeks cruising, I got Debbie to help me sweep the decks and then use the dinghy to clean around the hull after which it looked much better.

The first rain of our holiday overnight had cleared up by morning for a walk around the Barton Turf moorings after which we set off further up the River Ant in the cooling breeze, arriving at Stalham, a village well served by shops. Then downstream on the River Ant, crossed Barton Broad after which we moored up at the Staithe and walked into the village to have some lunch. We then cruised further back down the ant stopping at Ludham Bridge for afternoon tea and some Calor gas before cruising up the River Bure to rank with, where the end of the day was disturbed by blaring HiFi’s and the antics of other boat crews
I was awoken during the night by the sound of the refrigerators ‘auto ignition’ system ticking as a result of running out of Calor gas. Also, by the first rain of our holiday at 3am. The weather was fine again by the morning and whilst breakfast was being prepared, I walked around the Barton turf moorings and found the facilities for private sailing club members very good indeed. It was peaceful, even for a Saturday, as we set off further up the River Ant today, keeping the breeze running through the boat and what was billed as being the hottest day this summer.

We enjoyed a good day on the Broads after a quiet and peaceful night. By Blue Peter dinghy across Womack Water to Ludham Dyke for coffee and cake and then off by bus to Norwich to get cash from the Abbey National. Lunch at McDonalds and some Council enquiries for me and some shopping for the others before our bus back after which we were glad to be in a cool breeze aboard on a very hot day. Then down the Thurne and up the Ant to Ludham Bridge for water and then further up the river and across Barton Broad where Debbie and I sailed across to Barton Turf and back. Thatcher remains in deep trouble with her parliamentary colleagues and now has a new water industry crisis with 100,000 Thames customers now without clean water. Harry Worth has died and Ken Dodd has got off on the tax evasion charge
Another very quiet and peaceful night – we are enjoying places without the noise of aircraft, traffic and trains. Once we were ready, we rather precariously boarded the Blue Peter dinghy and outboard motor to cross Womack Water to the Ludham Dyke and had coffee and cake before setting off by bus to Norwich. We had done this to get money from the Abbey National, which are rare institutions in the Broads. This accomplished, we had lunch at McDonalds and then shopped for an hour before it was time to catch our bus back. I had taken the girls to the library, settled them down and then gone to the Broadland District Council offices, only to find the Horning is part of the North Norfolk District!

A slow start on a very sunny and bright morning as I walked down to the phone box to call the Broadland Agency to hear that my offer for Heronshaw has been recommended to the owners. Off to West Somerton, stopping for drinks at Martham boatyard, and then walking to Winterton for a fish and chip lunch and afternoon on the beach before taking the bus back to Potter Heigham and then cruising on to Womack Water. The evening news was of the government’s difficulty over the level of Poll Tax and of an American air crash killing 130 people
I tried to get going early this morning, but it was a little while before we were setting out on Daniel’s boat during a very sunny and bright start to the day. I walked down to the telephone box at Potter Heigham and called the Broadland agency it seems that my offer of £105-110,000 is being recommended to the owners of Heronshaw and I must await a list of the inventory and the owners return from holiday in Scotland to progress the purchase, but it does look promising.
