Worrying about my Museum fundraising launch, I visited St Neots with Diana for coffee and shopping this morning and spent the rest of the morning delivering leaflets to Diddington and hearing of the very sad plans concerning the ending of traditional farm management the gravel industry takes over. Some time in Southoe and its outliers before seeing dad at Addenbrookes where he seems tired stoically awaiting developments.
England qualify for the World Cup in a televised football match against Poland after which I attended another village hall meeting to organise the November Fayre. The Tories plan changes to their controversial and unworkable poll tax and await the Chancellor’s speech at Blackpool the next day.
I had a poor night, frustrated over the situation with the Museum fundraising launch. These people have been dithering so long that they are ill-equipped to make early and active plans. I went into St Neots with Diana this morning, had coffee at the harvest bakery and then did some shopping. We had lunch at home after spending the rest of the morning delivering my Focus leaflets in Diddington.

A long, mild day enabled us to use our bikes to visit Diana’s parents in Cambridge after which we call him to see Dad in Addenbrookes where there was no further news for him. I therefore telephoned mum and Freda before collecting Debbie from Kimbolton and taking her horse-riding, buying her a saddle cover in the process. Working on museum matters this evening but not getting the cooperation I needed from colleagues.
The Tory conference was marred by the collapse of share prices and the pound sterling and the Tory Daily Mail paper called for Chancellor Lawson’s head on a platter.
This was a long day which started with the feeding of the fish and animals and then continued with breakfast and a trip to Cambridge. The weather was quite mild and warm which was nice as we used our bikes when visiting there. Di and I met her parents for a long chat over coffee and it was good to see them so well. We then had lunch at the Copper Kettle, which has returned to its former role, despite its refurbishment and one-time involvement as a ‘pizza parlour’.

An early morning kerfuffle with Diana struggling to get Debbie and her bicycle to Kimbolton and back, with Della also struggling to be taken to school. Then a long and depressing call from my Mum discussing her intractable problems such as it was late morning before I could return to work. Another visit to my Dad this afternoon in Addenbrookes where the consultant surgeons had also yet to concur on whether to operate on my Dad.
An HDC planning meeting this evening considered a strange proposal for a ‘Trucker’s Paradise’. As the pound weakens, the stock exchange falls and mortgage rates rise to 14.5%, my old contact Tory chairman Kenneth Baker will tomorrow open the Conservative party conference. Thousands of protesters in East Berlin conduct a pro-democracy vigil
A slow start to the day as I came down to breakfast in my dressing gown and then took a while to get showered and dressed. Diana had problems trying to get Debbie and her bicycle to Kimbolton in the rain. The traffic was congested, and she was back late to take Della to school. The doors were unlocked, and I was in the shower, when Amy and Katherine arrived and Della got into a right state when they could not get in. Then my mum called, and I spent a long time listening to her problems on the phone which were pretty depressing and intractable.

I had an early start for my visit to the Koi Carp auction at infiltration, and enlightening experience, and then home in time to join the family for this evening’s Harvest Supper and Barn Dance at the Village Hall.
28 actively-serving UDR men were arrested today under firearms and confidentiality charges and there have been widespread demonstrations for progress towards democracy in the German Democratic Republic.
We had an earlier night but then we slept on a bit and this made me rather late for my trip to Golborne. It was 7:30am when I woke up and I was out of the door by 8am to show how anxious I was to get going. The roads were quiet, and I got access to the M1 in 40 minutes and all the way up the M1 and M6 to Warrington in about 2 ½ hours.
