Slowly recovering from our successful local election day to drive over to Cambridge and chair a meeting at Glisson Road of the Constituency Campaign Strategy Meeting which was a difficult affair with everyone tired and intolerant after the rigours of election day.
I was still trying to recover from all of the effects of polling day this morning but first had to haul the coconut palm out of the pond. The poor thing's plant pot had dried out and it had become top-heavy and toppled into the drink! It was quite a business getting it out in the end. Before long it was lunch and then time to drive over to Cambridge to chair an afternoon meeting at Glisson Road of the Constituency Campaign Strategy Meeting. This was a difficult affair, first because I had not had time to prepare an agenda and then because all present were somewhat tired and intolerant.

The aftermath of our great victory sorting out the committee rooms but also celebrating our successes in The Wagon and Horses but regretting Labour had done less well as we now were level as joint leaders of the opposition on the District Council but we agreed to cooperate against the Tories.
I laid in a while but was still up by about 8.00am feeling very groggy after the night's activities. I checked with the television teletext and was pleased to find our victories recorded but surprised to find that the Labour Party had not only failed to win Huntingdon North against Mike Robertson, but had also lost their own Huntingdon West ward against Bill Biram! This meant that the Liberal Democrats had increased to the same as Labour and that we were now joint leaders of the opposition! Later I tried to call Jim Lomax but he was either not there or not answering and so I spoke to Mark Slater instead. I expressed our regret that he was not elected and agreed that it still made sense for our two parties to co-operate at both Town and District level. I then telephoned Bill Biram to congratulate him as we remember him when he used to be on the council and talk about fishing in the river Great Ouse.

A full working day starting with a 5am Little Chef breakfast meeting and ending up beyond 3am the following morning which resulted in a Polling Day Triumph with both Michael Pope and Derek Giles elected and all nine St Neots Town Council candidates giving us control and the Mayoralty - We had win a handsome landslide victory!
I was awake early again at about 5.00am and got dressed and ready to assist in any problems that might occur on the morning delivery of the "Please Vote Today leaflet". In the end, my colleagues managed this and so I just made telephone calls to both organising centres to make sure that this was the case before dropping off further information at each Committee Room and making my way to the Southoe Little Chef for breakfast. I had arranged a rendezvous with the other early morning staff and had my cellular telephone along with me keep in touch. I gave Keith Seiler a last-minute briefing about the Eaton Socon committee room and then welcomed a host of colleagues who were coming hungrily to the table. Just about broke away in time to get to the Eaton Socon Polling Station where I found a problem in telling before we had even started.

My final Eve of Poll preparations as the LibDems Regional Organiser as Polling Day the next day comes fast as a steam train but my arrangements were falling into place by making best use of my volunteer helpers
The time to elections shortens almost exponentially as the campaign goes on and, suddenly, we were running out of time to organise the remaining things that were required. John Davidson and I arranged to meet later on in the day once Diana had brought the new Shuttleworth paper from Cambridge but first I had to input the final canvassing data into the computer for Eaton Socon and prepare it for use. This took me most of the morning under some stress, but I was then ready for John in the afternoon. He brought his own computer over and we worked for some time together until all of the Eaton Socon printing was done and we were well into the Priory Park versions.
