Sam was settling into something of a routine now and slept through the night again. He undergoes car trips without any problem, has had his first trip in a dinghy and is daily better at coming to heel, sitting and stopping on command. It is just his toilet training that I am struggling with. I took him along with me whilst I gave Doris Vincent a lift to the railway station and he behaved himself and was not distracted. The decorator was finishing off the wallpapering in the bathroom today and then I re-fitted the wall appliances and then started on the floor.

First the Gripperods had to be nailed to the outside edge of the floor, leaving three quarters of the carpet thickness as a gap between them and the wall. Then the floor had to be covered with under-felt paper and I used a new tool to help me; a board with blades attached for running around the edge. This left the job of cutting and fixing the underlay and the actual job of laying the carpet for the morning. Earlier, I had taken delivery of our new bed from Bonds and then drove across to Jarrold’s in Norwich and bought and brought back two folding bed-chairs as well. The upstairs living room of Harnser now looks the part but I still needed to get some more furniture across from Heronshaw. All news reporters’ eyes were now on the EEC Summit where a bewildering range of problems have been brought to the Heads of Government for resolution. It will either be a grand success of things will fall flat as Britain's 6-month Presidency comes to an end.
