After a late-night watching Nick Faldo win the US Masters Golf, I was tired this morning but still did a round checking the flagboards and then took Debbie and her friend Helen Cranston to Offord and the stables where we did more horse-box training for Sundance for a hour or two. A last-minute book panic where they were missing a drawing and Des Merrill’s fax machine saved the day and that visit allowed us to talk election tactics and respond to some Tory tactics. This evening canvassing for Percy in Buckden where he might just lose without more canvassing. The dockers put off their strike to get further legal advice, the Chancellor is under pressure for a high interest and exchange rate policy and the stock exchange slides. Today was showery but thankfully fine later.
Last night, I stayed up much later than intended and watch the final round of the US Masters golf tournament to see Englishman Nick Faldo win the championship after the Scot last year. Tired this morning as a result. After breakfast, I did a round of the Little Paxton flagboards and re-seated one or two of them and then took Debbie and her friend Helen Cranston to Offord and the stables. I stayed with them for an hour or two and gave Sundance some more horse trailer training and made some practice even if I wore myself out in the process. Once home, I had a worrying call from my book printers to say that they were missing a line drawing with the print date tomorrow I opted to take the copy over to Des Merrill’s and uses facsimile machine to send it to the print. Whilst there, I advised Des on other postal vote routine and he had a number of people that qualify. He then showed me a couple of Tory letters attackers over local issues and this prompted a rush job on my part to get the counter letter off to the local papers and then get delivered urgently.

After a fried breakfast and the a few morning chores, we took Daniel to Kimbolton for the start of his school trip to Russia even though the news today was of a curfew in Georgia after 16 die in unrest. We then took the girls to Wickstead Park for an afternoon of unlimited rides where I got bored and naughtily distracted before home for a satisfactory check on our flagboards and then an evening ordering my affairs. As a result of the Russia nuclear submarine sinking, we now know that 27 of the 69 crew died but ‘they say’ that the two nuclear weapons and propulsion system are supposed to be safe.
We had a lay in this morning and then I had to hurry with my shower and shave as my fried breakfast was soon ready. I did a few chores in my conservatory and with my birds and then we set off to take Daniel to Kimbolton for the start of his week’s holiday to Russia. After this, we went on to Wickstead Park to spend the afternoon and the girls enjoyed lots of the rides with an unlimited armband on. I found the occasion something of a bore, as there is little for adults to do, apart from supervising the children. I was reduced to gazing at a young lady with a clinging dress and what must have been a ‘G’-string on underneath as there were no pantie lines.

On a warm and dry day, with just a few showers later, I was organising a working party to make and post 120/130 flag boards for the election campaign; installing them in Paxton for Michael, Offord and Buckden for Percy before taking over a load for Des Merrill in Gransden. After Debbie spent the day at the stables, and Di was filling in insurance claims for his car, Daniel prepared for his trip to Russia and they all watched a Crocodile Dundee video film in the evening. My book printers were struggling to finish it on time
A little late to bed (again!) and so slow to get going this morning. I first tended the conservatory and animals, had breakfast, and then my working party started to arrive and we spent the morning making and posting 120/130 flag boards for the election campaign. Then Michael Pope returned from some canvassing and we set up a dozen or more boards in Mill Lane before lunch. We carried on after lunch and laid the boards along the great North Road, High Street and Gordon road. A few more and then we loaded up with the boards for Percy Meyer went over to Offord and Buckden to erect them. Back home to tea and then, this evening, I took over those for Des Merrill in Gransden and so a key can get his boards out in the morning. The family were watching a Crocodile Dundee video film this evening. Debbie had a day at the stables and enjoyed it. Daniel was preparing for his trip to Russia. Di was filling in insurance claims forms and fretting a little. I checked with the book printers this morning and they are still struggling to get it finished on time. The weather was dry and warm today with only a few showers to distract us from the good work.

After a much-appreciated restful night’s sleep, I spent sometime this morning tending my conservatory and then completing more paperwork but, following a painful incident of getting strong aftershave solution in my left eye, I could not help Percy canvass this afternoon but I did manage to assist Michael Pope canvassing this evening and got a very encouraging response. News today that Paddy Ashdown will be visiting Paxton at my invitation, but my printers are now dubious about the 20th April deadline. My dehumidifier is not strong enough
Earlier to bed again last night and then a restful night’s sleep which was appreciated. After breakfast, I spent a little time in the conservatory tending the plants and fish before returning to my office to carry on with the paperwork. Frances Williams cried off again from canvassing and so I offered to help Percy Meyer in Buckden this afternoon. In the meantime, I heard from the Cambridge Social and Liberal Democrats that the Rt Hon Paddy Ashdown MP (SLD party leader) will be coming to our village next Tuesday morning, following my request. I had to phone and then write to the local papers and most of them will be turning to. Rushing to get out, I then had the painful experience of accidentally splashing a strong aftershave solution into my left eye. This prevented me getting over to help Percy, but I did struggle round in some pain to deliver the press invitations and started to get the latest leaflet batches out to the deliverers.
