On a day of fine weather, I went over to Offord to help Percy and two others canvas to there and had completed quite a section of Offord Cluny by the end of the morning. This evening, five us for were canvassing Abbotsley, after which we analysed the returns which showed the prediction as being very close. The TGWU, on behalf of the dockers, holding back from a dock strike in order to choose winnable ground and inflation is up to 7.9%.
I was very tired again this morning and pledged that I would have an early night tonight in consequence. I did my chores and then went over to Offord to help Percy and two others canvas there. I got on quite well, finding many people out and leaving ‘sorry we missed you’ notes, which are very effective, and we had done quite a section of Offord Cluny by the end of the morning. I took a rest after lunch and then tried to start some paperwork this afternoon, but it is difficult to change gear so quickly. I also chased my printer and the book is still on schedule for next week which is a relief. This evening, five us for were canvassing Abbotsley and found it a bit tricky with two candidates for two elections. We still canvassed quite a lot of support in the absence of any visible Tory campaigning whatsoever. They have yet to even put out a leaflet we could beat them if they do not soon spot the danger and our prediction is neck and neck with our work winning through.

Organising the History of Little Paxton book cover on day that started drizzly then continued mild and sunny which was nice to take Debbie to the stables and then canvas in Michael Pope’ ward with some success. This evening to call in on the Offords canvasser and then to the Village Hall AGM where I was elected as Vice-Chairman and Trustee
I slept well but was still tired this morning after yesterday’s exertions. After breakfast, I progress the matter of the urgent approval needed for the colour wraparound cover for my History of Little Paxton. I had to collect the data post packet from the sorting office and then turn it round and return it by the same means also took Debbie to the stables for a day’s horse care and riding with Helen Cranston. Then I did some canvassing with Percy Meyer in the great Paxton High Street where I managed to get a few votes and some prominent posters up.

The morning canvassing with Percy in Buckden and this afternoon taking Debbie and Sundance on my own to Pony Club before home before a big storm to more news coverage of Paddy Ashdown’s visit
An active day today. I spent this morning canvassing with Percy in Buckden and putting up as many poster boards as possible. I also had a few other things to do that left me quite tired before the day’s main event. This afternoon, I had to take Debbie and Alex Naylor and their two ponies to the pony club on my own as Fiona was ill and had hurt her back. She helps us into the trainer with the ponies but I had to drive them there; help prepare the girls and the ponies; get them in the box and back safely. Surprisingly, I managed to do all of this and it was quite an enjoyable event. We did not get back until after 9pm and later by the time the trailer and ponies had been put away. The first of the local newspapers arrived tonight – Hunts Post – on its front page and headlines were all very form favourable to us and the Paddy Ashdown visit. The weather stayed fine today but the heavens opened with a big storm just as the pony club event finished.

The big day of the visit of Paddy Ashdown to The Hayling View on a wet and windy day for a big press and radio event in my lounge and new conservatory with many journalists and a radio station in attendance and then this evening to a HDC Policy Committee where they considered my proposals for new standing orders but would not let me speak! Then canvassing in Buckden where the Tories have yet to appear to oppose us!
This was a big day today, but first we had to do some necessary chores. Diana and I drove up to Sawtry in our separate cars and left the Range Rover there to have some service work done on it. Once back, I had about an hour and a half to prepare the house for today’s event. First, I move the dining table out of the conservatory and made room for several chairs. Then I organised Joan and Peter to make the house and garden ready and use the rest of the time to make up some signs for the doors and lapel badges for Michael Pope and I. I then changed and went to the lounge and conservatory which I decided upon as the best reception facility. Soon press photographers for the Hunts Post, the Citizens Express and The Town Crier arrived and then also journalists Celia Chignell of the Express and Peter Jupp of the Hunts Post. Then a journalist and recordist from the CN FM 103 local independent radio station; and all of our candidates and finally Paddy Ashdown, leader of the Democrats, with all of his entourage.
