As the rain fell incessantly on a cold day with an east wind, I spent the day inside on my backlog of newspaper cuttings and then watched televised football and heard of Gorbachev’s visit to Ireland and the government’s embarrassment over the Harrods takeover
I decided to spend most of the day working through my backlog of newspaper cuttings and did not go out, except to tend the ducks and the doves. The rain fell incessantly in a steady drizzle which made the fact palatable and it was quite cold as well, with an east wind to boot. I also watched a televised football match (Arsenal versus Manchester United) were the waterlogged pitch cramped any style and resulted in a dour 11 draw. Wanted to phone Michael to see if he had recovered enough to have taken his mother to Hunstanton but decided against troubling them. The news was full of Gorbachev’s visit to Ireland and of the government’s embarrassment over the Harrods takeover publicity

We started canvassing today in Little Paxton with an acceptable response on a fine and bright but cold day without Michael, due to sickness, but with Peter While to help this morning and Percy Meyer and Des Merrill this afternoon. Taking Daniel later for a driving lesson concentrating on steering and control. Forty people have died over the rejection of the new regime in violent clashes in Namibia and 15 to 30,000 people protest in Scotland against the poll tax, whilst writs and injunctions fly over the report into the Harrods takeover.
Another bright and fine day but much colder and the forecast is for rain and wind to come soon. The start of canvassing in our election campaign. Michael was still sick and so I took over the responsibility of organising the day. I prepared canvas packs and badges we met at Michael’s at 9.30 for 10.00am. Just Peter While helped me this morning, but Percy Meyer and Des Merrill to help this afternoon. We made a start in Little Paxton and had quite an acceptable response on a par with my experiences of last year, which was a good start. I took Daniel for a driving lesson this evening when I had become free and concentrated on the steering and control of the car which improved as a result.
