To St Neots this morning on a fine, warm and sunny day to get the dry cleaning done and my haircut. This afternoon, making lots of calls and progressing matters until I drafted a press letter about the unfairness of the District Council standing orders and then gave Daniel a long driving lesson around local villages delivering them. Mikhail Gorbachev is visiting China for the first summit in 30 years, it was the first day of the Hillsborough public enquiry.
It was another fine and warm day, with the sun shining for most of it. I had a lay in this morning, in view of my exertions of yesterday, and then I got showered, dressed ready for my breakfast of French Toast. I had decided to go to St Neots with Diana to get a lot of dry cleaning done and also my hair cut. This took all of the morning, but I was home for lunch and the afternoon. I made lots of telephone calls and expedited a whole host of problems and outstanding matters and then I did a press letter to political journalists about the unfairness of the new District Council Standing Orders. After tea, I took Daniel for a long drive around Little Paxton, St Neots, Huntingdon and St Ives to deliver my press letters and then came home to watch the news and to write up my journal. I spoke to both my own and Diana’s parents today who are all fine. Today saw the visit of Mikhail Gorbachev to Peking, China, and it was the first Soviet/Chinese summit for 30 years.

To Milton Park, the country park of Lady Fitzwilliam near Peterborough, for Debbie’s first horse-riding event where she had a good learning experience and won two rosettes for some modest accomplishments with the Minimus Jumping Course and Minimum Cross Country. Home to take Daniel for an evening driving lesson as former Prime Minister Ted Heath criticises Thatcher for ‘misleading people over the EEC’
We had a very early start today – up at 5amand out with Debbie at 6am to get Sundance ready for the Hunt Supporters Club meeting at Milton Park. It all went to plan, and Sundance went straight into his box at 7:30am and the rest of us went by car to this country park of Lady Fitzwilliam near Peterborough. Once there, we had to tack the ponies up and walk to the courses and try to work out the order of events. First, Debbie tried the Minimus jumping course and won a rosette for a clear round at the third attempt. Then she entered the 14.2 hands show-jumping and was eliminated the three refusals at the first fence. The course was difficult, and she had just seen a rider take a very bad fall and escape serious injury. We then tried the more difficult minimus jumping but made little headway and so we had a picnic lunch. Later, Debbie went clear in the minimus cross country at the second attempt.

On a sunny and chilly day, with some showers, I took Debbie to the stables, caught Sundance and helped Debbie prepare him for a jumping lesson which she managed quite well. We then packed up and prepared for tomorrow’s event as I also dropped some things off to Percy Meyer. Marjorie Shepherd was very keen on my book.
This was a tiring day during which I did not achieve very much but I did manage a little relaxation. The day started early with a pre-breakfast check on the fish pool and swimming pool. I was upset with Daniel over his lack of attention to the swimming pool all week and made him vacuum it out before breakfast. I then took Debbie over to Offord, caught Sundance in Superior Field and helped Debbie tack him up for a jumping lesson. She did quite well with it ‘because her father was not there’, but I was watching from across the field. Later this morning, I typed out Percy Meyer’s election ‘thank-you’ letters and, after lunch, I dropped them off to his place in Offord and went on to see how the girls were getting on. I stayed with them until they had finished grooming and plaiting Sundance, which was quite a performance.

On a day of sun and heavy showers, I took Di to Bedford this morning and spent time at the Peacocks auction room before looking around the library and bookshops with a view to placing my book. A disappointing and stuffy lunch at Beales, and then little found of interest at Willington Garden Centre on our way home before collecting Debbie and Daniel to change Debbie’s chest protector in Alconbury and give Daniel another driving lesson.
I could not get up very early this morning as I have been catching up on this last two days journal. Poor Daniel had got up early for a driving lesson, but he had to wait until this evening. I was late down to breakfast and soon Britain’s, the furnishers, arrived to fit a new lounge carpet. I then opted to go with Diana to Bedford this morning and spent time at the Peacocks auction room and then looking around the library and bookshops with a view to placing my book for sale soon. Di had a hair appointment and then we had lunch together at Beales, which was a bit disappointing. The lack of light, windows and hot atmosphere was not very conducive to our salad lunch. Once home, this afternoon, we moved the furniture back into the lounge and on to the new carpet and installed the TV and video such that we were then back to normal again.
