I spent the morning in Cambridge with Diana on another hot day doing the rounds of bookshops and library contacts to promote sales of my new book and meeting Di’s parents for morning coffee before calling in at the large Cambridge garden centre to seek tropical plants for my conservatory. Later, to take Debbie to the stables to ride on Sundance and to prepare more book publicity for tomorrow. Thatcher and Gorbachev are in conflict over diplomatic expulsions, as she continues to upset the teaching profession and suffers tube strikes in London.
This was yet another hot day and this time the sun came out early and the temperature was soon in the 80sdegF. I decided to join Diana on a trip to Cambridge and prepared my publicity deliveries accordingly for the city and details of the bookshop publicity already sent out. The air conditioning of the Range Rover was a godsend today, particularly as I was dressed in sports jacket and trousers with shirt and tie for effect. We had coffee in Eden Lily’s coffee shop with Diana’s parents and then I did a round of bookshops and spoke to the buyers. An outright rejection from WHSmith, reluctance from Dylan and then an encouraging acceptance from Heffers, whose buyer ordered 18 to begin with. I also spoke to the local history librarian in Cambridge Central library who admired the book and promised to recommend copies for the lending library. I also delivered all manner of copies of publicity to other key contacts in the schools and library services in Cambridge. We stopped off at the large Cambridge garden centre on the way back via the M11. I bought one rather exotic plant and the girl assistant will be able to tell me on Friday if they can get me anymore tropical plants for the conservatory.

Preparing my introductory book offer for shop-school and library contacts on a day that started cool but continued hot dry and sunny, which was ideal for Diana to host two troops of brownies for a swimming pool experience. A late session this evening with Daniel for his GCSE computing exam tomorrow. The pound sterling fell 3 ½ US cents today against the dollar in a delayed reaction to Friday’s trade figures and the stock exchange fell 35 points. In China, the protests continue as the country slips into political anarchy day and Thatcher’s government considers ‘new policies’ for the NHS
Yet another hot day but it started cooler with the morning dawn. I was a little late down to breakfast and then tended the fish pool and conservatory as usual. Then, in my office, I began the task of compiling a list of school and library contacts to which I am writing to put an introductory offer on the supplier of my Little Paxton History books. After a meal of beef pie, I then continued after lunch on my project. Later, I had to go out to get Daniel from school and I gave him a driving lesson on the way home. Once we arrived back, the house was full of Brownies who had come in two troops to have an outing in our swimming pool.

On another fine and sunny day, with temperatures of 80°F in the shade, Di took Debbie horse-riding and I help Daniel get his boat little lady out of the river and onto the trailer before we enjoyed a barbecue on the front lawn. I collected Debbie with friends to come back swimming in our pool and joined them until doing more chores and signing more books for sale
I had a less-unsettled night with the heat and also the fact that Di had a tummy upset and eventually had to sleep in the spare room. Quite an early awake anyway and managed to tend the conservatory before breakfast of fried egg etc. was ready. Di took Debbie to the horse-riding stables and I help Daniel get the Little Lady out of the river and up onto the trailer.

On the hottest day so far this year, Di took 24 brownies on a coach trip to the Woburn wildlife Park and, after making a crab salad for Daniel and I, we took a drive to Huntingdon in St Neots to deliver my book mailing and sold 12 books to WHSmith. The Liverpool Everton cup final proceeds today were donated to the Hillsborough disaster appeal and China has suppressed the media and implemented martial law to control unrest and UK electricity workers have accepted a 9.2% pay offer
Another hot day – this one the warmest so far this year though it started off cool and misty. Di was off today with 24 Brownies on a coach trip to the Woburn Wildlife Park and she took Della as well as Debbie which was fine. This left me alone and I spent the first part of the morning tending the pool and birds. The water temperature has been up 75° and that makes the fish very excited and continually hungry. I supplemented their pellets with some brown bread to fill up a bit. Later, I continued the task of preparing the launch details for my book – press releases and then trade terms for the local booksellers. We made our own lunch – a crab salad for me and toast for Daniel – and then we took a drive to Huntingdon and St Neots to give Daniel a driving lesson and to deliver my mailing.
