Whilst Di got on with chores and then hosted a visit from her parents and the girls toddled off to school, I had a meeting with Ian & Margaret James of Onsite where I declined to sign a shareholders’ agreement and suggested the Directors consider its ongoing viability.
Some time later with Della teaching her to ride a bicycle and then trying to convene my party group before meetings with Samuel Jones executives about the latest occupation of their playing field in Little Paxton by the gypsies.
We did not go anywhere today but stayed at home to get on with our work after the girls had toddled off to school. Della now seems settled in and, after a little weep at the bus stop yesterday, she was quite happy this morning. Di concentrated on housework and her shopping and had a visit from her Mum and Dad as I first got on with all the chores in the absence of the gardener. Then a meeting with Ian & Margaret James of Onsite who came to update me on the occurrences over the last couple of months. They had done their deal with Dyfed but it had not helped a great deal as the terms were harsh and little money was raised. I was concerned to hear of other transactions that were being done against my interest and without shareholders’ approval and I declined to sign a shareholder’s resolution as I was not party to it.

Considering the aftermath of Derek’s custody following his armed visit to the gypsy camp and then off to Essex to collect the Rolls Royce Corniche and agree future work on it. Back home to two meetings of Little Paxton Parish Council this evening where we considered planning applications and then the future sports provision in the village.
I had a fairly poor night, with the weather continuing warm and close, and then started this morning by telephoning round to agree our position on the conduct of the police. Overnight, my mood had changed from that of being critical of Derek and defensive to that of being rather upset at him having been detained overnight and only conditionally released with the resulting publicity being damaging to his professional and personal standing. The meetings with party colleagues yesterday had been very sympathetic and this morning everybody agreed to support Derek and Sandy if they decided to make a complaint. It was left to Derek to make the final decision.

We were well prepared for Della's first day at Kimbolton for which she was well looked after and settled in well after which I attended some Liberal Dem Party Meetings in which we made preparations for Sue Sutton’s campaign and discussed arrangements for the party conference in Bournemouth and Southampton
Like all the recent days, it was hot again today with the air full of soot and smut from the stubble burning. The nights are quite close which makes it difficult to get to sleep and the garden longs for rain. But today was Della's big day at a new school and Diana had prepared well for it. We both reassured her and there was Debbie to show her the ropes. Di took them both to the bus stop to catch the school bus and then drove to Kimbolton by car and was at the other end to see them safely into school. Della was allocated an older pupil to look after her for the day and welcome her to the school and she seemed to go quite willingly.

After foregoing our normal trip to Cambridge, Di took Debbie to get some new shoes and I collected Derek from Peterborough after he was released on what turned out to be two technical offences. After a conference with Derek, Percy and Sally, we agreed a public response and I attended a Paxton Pits nature reserve in the evening. I also phoned my Mum who was in much better spirits.
We decided not to go in to Cambridge today as there far too much happening and too much to do with the girls going back to school tomorrow. Instead, Diana took Debbie into St Neots to get her some shoes and Della stayed at home with me and Daniel. I was making telephone calls, sorting through my post and papers and awaiting word from Peterborough where Derek Giles was appearing at the Magistrates Court on his firearms offences. It was emerging that the police had taken a statement from the Town Clerk about the recent events and that there were two technical charges but not very serious ones.
