After a breakfast of boiled duck egg, Amy and Della joined Debbie for a trip to Offord for their first ride on Sundance. A mad rush to the pony club meeting this afternoon and much trouble getting Sundance into the horse trailer but still an enjoyable afternoon for Debbie, though cold for us in the biting wind and showers. Secretary Paul Channon at the centre of an air transport row over withholding warnings prior to the Lockerbie plane bombing and now security is ramped up for the Easter weekend. An explosive lorry catches fire and explodes in Peterborough
I was still tired when brought my morning tea and my daughters were jumping all over the bed before I could wake up. A breakfast of boiled duck egg and then we took Debbie over to Offord. This morning, she took Amy and Della went along for the first time. I left them to get Sundance ready and delivered my press releases and memos to the district Council. Once back, I supervised the session that saw Amy and Della having their first rides on Sundance. Then off home for coffee and on to St Neots to collect the new Escort car and back to get the girls for lunch. Mad lunch then followed. Fiona Naylor had got the times of the pony club outings wrong and we had to rush to get the pony prepared, into the horse trailer and on the way to where the pony club rally was being held. We had great trouble getting Sundance in the box both going and coming back and we will have to give him some box-training to get over the problem.

After sending off and delivering my press releases, and taking Debbie over to the stables, Daniel Diana and I bought a nice Escort 1100 car for Daniel in St Neots. Percy and Michael came over afterwards and we resumed work on the election campaign before I attended a very disorganised Personnel Committee meeting of the council this evening. Up late, working on my proposed changes to Standing Orders
I spent some time today on press releases for our election campaign. I worked out the changes and ended up by posting these for some news-papers and delivering others by hand. I started the day by taking Debbie over to the stables. Then Daniel, me and Diana went to St Neots to look at buying a car for Daniel. We found a nice Escort 1100 that had been owned by a doctor from being new in 1982 decided on that. This afternoon, I ended up with Percy and Michael at my house having realised that we had to get the election campaign off to a reasonable start. We agreed to get our press releases out come what may this week and therefore acted on the decision immediately.

I spent a full day catching up with paperwork, accounts and financial affairs before taking Debbie for a good horse-riding lesson and then advocating measures to prevent antisocial dog fouling at the District Council
A full day catching up on paperwork. This morning, I paid all of my outstanding bills (and some of them were very overdue indeed) and then the rest of the morning and afternoon I reconciled my accounts statements and worked out what monies would need to be paid out and moved too and fro. At 3pm, I took Debbie over to her horse riding. On her own at first, Debbie had broken up from school at lunchtime and so she had the riding school to herself for a while and practiced jumps. Then she had a lesson with the other girls when they arrived, and they swapped ponies for practice. This evening, I went to the Leisure and Amenities Committee of Huntingdonshire District Council and I made a strong speech for more measures to prevent antisocial dog fouling.

The submission of Des Merrill’s election address, the murder of two of Ulster’s hiring ranking policemen and the questions remaining about security after a Lockerbie air crash warning was not passed on
I had my breakfast and then got down to laying out my index into five pages of camera-ready copy for the book. Now there was nothing else to do but send it off and wait. Later, I finished off the first election leaflet changes and printed out the artwork for Percy, Des and Michael for then to be taken by Percy to Cambridge this evening. The news tonight is of two of Ulster’s highest-ranking policemen being murdered by terrorists near the border in Ulster. They were a Superintendent and Chief Superintendent who had been south of the border on a liaison meeting. Transport secretary, Paul Channon, is still on the defensive over security arrangements prior to the Lockerbie air crash. He will not make a parliamentary statement to explain why a warning was not passed on.
