This was a worrying day for poor Daniella having developed terribly swollen eyes is allergic to reaction overnight and so we spent much of it away from the house to give her respite and chance of recovery as refreshing rains came at last. Then home to resume my negotiations for Admiral’s Cottage talking to agents and professional advisers before taking Debbie to Offord and leaving her there as I had to rush back to chair the Little Paxton Village Hall committee meeting where we organised the forthcoming Village Hall fête and fundraising dance. Thatcher is refusing sanctuary to fleeing refugees from Hong Kong after the latest crisis and is roundly condemned
We had an appalling start to the day. Poor Daniella had developed terribly swollen eyes in the night and, when Diana went to wake up, she could see no eyelids at all. She seemed to have developed an extremely acute allergy to something and was so swollen above and below the eyes that she looked like a Chinese and was worried and discomfited. We all concentrated on reassuring her and comforting her in the face of this quite horrifying condition. We got the other children off to school, tended the conservatory and then I phoned and arranged an urgent doctor’s appointment for her. He agreed that it was serious and prescribed ‘anti--histamine’ tablets, eyedrops and antibiotics for sore throat that may have been the trigger. It was viewed as being much more likely that it was the interference of something to which she is allergic, and we can only think of a horse blanket that had been hanging in the hall or something of a dietary nature.

I spent the whole morning talking to agents and professional contacts in Norfolk about my idea of acquiring Admiral’s Cottage for rental before a poor meeting this evening of the HDC Economic Development Committee, start of business due to lack of willing investment. Further news of thousands of students killed in China by repressive troops when peacefully protesting whilst Solidarity takes all before it in the Polish elections.
I had trouble waking up and getting down to breakfast with the family that was all ready to start back at school. Then I tended the conservatory and invited Pete in to discuss the plants and fish needs so they will manage a bit better when I go away again. Then to my telephone and the whole morning talking to agents and professional contacts in Norfolk about completion of the deal. I needed to instruct a solicitor, surveyor, booking agent and I also spoke to a neighbouring property owner and other contacts. Then I had lunch, made a few more calls and then set off to a 3pm appointment with my accountant in St Neots that I used to review all of my plans and tax affairs which are now a bit clearer.

Replanting the pond water lilies on another sunny but cool day after being uprooted by the hungry Koi during our absence and then running the sprinkler all day to water a parched garden. The rest of the day on my financial affairs, reconciling bank accounts and completing transactions for the last tax year, stopping to take the family to the Little Chef for lunch and then Daniel for a driving lesson later. TV film shows Chinese troops killing thousands of peacefully protesting students and of a gas pipeline explosion killing hundreds in Russia
I slept very soundly after a somewhat late night. By contrast, Diana was restless after going to bed much earlier – she must have got used to Wroxham! After an early breakfast, I started work on the conservatory, replanting the waterlilies that the hungry Koi had uprooted and ensuring both they and the plants were well attended. Another sunny but cool day and, with the garden looking quite parched I ran the lawn sprinkler all day and that to keep moving it. Then the start of the day at my paperwork. I first cleared my desk and sorted out all of the urgent financial transactions. I reconciled my bank accounts was quite a game stop at lunchtime, I decided to take the family to the Little Chef to give Di a break and chance to gain time for her washing and ironing.

After a hasty departure from our chalet, we viewed Bure Cottages and started to negotiate the purchase of one of them, subject to some boundary changes. We also reviewed one of Moore’s luxury craft before leaving and stopping at my Mum and Dad’s place in Stanton. Home later, after a Little Chef tea, to find lots of things needing doing at The Hayling View. The Chinese authorities suppress the student demonstrations by shooting indiscriminately and killing many tens of Chinese students in Tiananmen Square.
We experienced another rather close night under the unnatural duvet and then had the rush to pack all of our belongings and vacate the chalet (which was number 38 of the Peninsula) by 9 AM. The boys seemed to survive the night on dry land quite well and we all packed up with only the customary amount of disorganisation and recrimination. I then viewed numbers 4 and 6 Bure Cottages and embarked upon negotiations for the purchase of the Admiral’s cottage, number 6. They wanted hundred and £70,000; I offered £160,000 and we settled on hundred and £65,000 but my agreement was subject to some boundary changes back in front which I hope they can accommodate. We also looked at one of the Moore’s luxury craft this morning and Di seems set on it.
