On nicer day today with less rain and more sunny spell, Di took Debbie off to Kimbolton for the start of her day trip to France, I set off for Bedford in the Range Rover to get the rest of its service done but they had ordered the wrong part and could not complete the work. Then the swimming pool and some time running up both the Reliant and Rolls Royce. Thatcher spoke on Europe in the House of Commons today and the event was a bit like a voice from the grave. The stock market is falling again.
It was a bit of a frustrating day today as I stayed at home for most of it and tried to get some work done. Diana was up early and took Debbie off to Kimbolton for the start of her day trip to France. This had all happened before I was awake and then I just had breakfast with Diana and Della as the only two left. Having finished breakfast, I set off for Bedford in the Range Rover to get the rest of its service done. I dropped off the car at Marshalls and queried an item from last time to keep them on their toes. Then a salesman gave me a lift back and I settled down to some work. The swimming pool was the first chore and then I spent much of the day on correspondence and deskwork. I went out to deliver some letters, and get some money and stationery at one point, but that was about all.

The drive to Cambridge through intense fog to see a lonely Charles and for my Glisson Road meeting about Sue Sutton’s election with everybody late and then home to tie up the Focus distribution and hear from Daniel, who had news of having (just) passed his UEA exams.
I was up particularly early this morning as I wanted to get off to Cambridge by 9.00am. I did my morning chores through gaps in the drizzly rain that seems to be plaguing us at the moment and then drove Della to school whilst delivering notes to two of my FOCUS helpers to chase them up. I was expecting a party colleague to come and use my computer today and she would either come before 9.00am to get in and use the computer whilst I was out, or would come this afternoon when we were back from Cambridge. She had not come by 9.00am and so we left for Cambridge and were there by 9.45am. A strange patch of fog as we drove to the city. It was only some 50yards across but very intense with near-zero visibility and the worst driving hazard we had ever seen.

After an early start to the day, reviewing the HDC Finance Agenda with Michael Pope, the rest of the day working on correspondence and briefing matter for my council colleagues and being interviewed by radio and newspaper journalists about my anti-smoking motions which are before the council. I had also run up the Amstrad and used Wayplan to calculate passage plans round from Norfolk to Kings Lynn.
This evening’s meeting went very well as Michael, and I held the Tories to account for the inefficiency of its operation and also the insufficiency of its spending plans.
I was up on time today and joined the girls at the breakfast table as usual. My morning chores extended this morning to include the swimming pool and then Michael Pope arrived at 8.15am for a meeting to review the evening's HDC Finance agenda. We went through all of the numerous items and took them apart, finding plenty to criticise the council about in terms of the inefficiency of its operation and also the insufficiency of its spending plans. We were not able to finish up this process until after 9.30am as there was so much to consider. The rest of my day working on correspondence and briefing matter for my council colleagues and also being interviewed by radio and newspaper journalists about my anti-smoking motions which are before the council.

After some domestic chores, , it was time to get ready for our trip to the village of Whaddon. The Liberal Democrat peer, Lord Whaddon, another self-made man and kindred spirit of mine, had opened his house and garden to the party for a produce market and buffet lunch which was a success despite the rain. The England Test match and Wimbledon tennis were less fortunate with the weather.
Having arrived back last night, we had a more leisurely start to the day, and we enjoyed the rest and a nice fried breakfast before pursuing the day. As it was dry to start with, I took down the tennis posts and net so that they could be stored in the shed and then tended the birds, fish and conservatory. To my office for a while and then, approaching 11.30am, it was time to get ready for our trip to the village of Whaddon. The Liberal Democrat peer, Lord Whaddon, had opened his house and garden to the party for a produce market and buffet lunch and we had agreed to go.
