Tamils on the Jaffna peninsular
Tamils on the Jaffna peninsular

Preparing and attending my accountants meeting this morning, agreeing with Mr Larkin to undertake more dredging, wiring up the summer house and listening to the Thatcher government trying to defend National Health waiting list delays and of the plight of Tamils on the Jaffna peninsular

Awake and up very early this morning after a late and alcoholic night. Wanted to work on my financial summaries ahead of my accountants meeting this morning and so showered, shaved and dressed quickly and spent an hour at my desk before breakfast. The morning meal with the family and then back to work, listening to the radio at the same time. Glad to type a lot of the contents into the computer, but it was an impossible task to finish it and so I broke off for coffee and made my way into St Neots to see him at 10.15am. Chatted for an hour, reviewing the status of my tax affairs and identifying the outstanding action necessary on both sides and then drove home amidst more showers, some heavy. Reviewed the progress of gardener and riverbank contractor. Pete was being pursued by the doves, who were eating the new bedding plants until they were fed some seed and lettuce.

Mr Larkin was working on Eddie & Stella’s frontage today and just about finished it. I approached him about doing more dredging than he planned and we agreed the criteria of 3 ft depth, 3ft out. After a salad lunch, worked this afternoon and evening on wiring the electric power and lighting within the new summerhouse and had just about finished the task by dusk. Saw the girls briefly a few times today and found an hour this evening to pressure Daniel on his schoolwork and revision for his forthcoming ‘O’ level exams. In late tonight after walking along the Hayling footpath and adding a diagonal red stripe in adhesive tape to the no-cycling signs for added emphasis. I am sure some people think the bicycle picture within a red cycle permits bicycles. Locked up, my journal & news before bed. The news today is of the closure of the Iranian Consulate in Manchester and five diplomats are ordered out of the country. The government hope that it will not lead to a fit-for-tat escalation, but it undoubtedly will. In the election campaign, there were false reports of opinion poll reverses for the Tries that hit shares on the stock exchange. In the end the poll saw the Tory lead diminished, but still at 8%. Thatcher and Tebbit were under pressure in their news conference today over the extension of waiting lists for NHS operations in general and the case of a young hole-in-the-heart boy in particular. Indian air force planes have dropped relief supplies to the Tamils on the Jaffna peninsula, first showing their contents to journalists to prove that they were carrying essential commodities. Sri Lanka’s government has reacted by calling the airdrop a violation of their independence and sovereignty. Another soldier is shot dead in Northern Ireland.
