After a cold night, the builders and electricians/plumber worked all day fitting my pond liner and starting to put the curb stones around two sections of conservatory pond. Good coverage for my activities in the local press and a number of phone calls received after my focus newsletter distribution, which I followed up, before spending the rest of the evening at a Priory Doom meeting. The Chancellor announces more pension increases in response to some recent criticism about considering means testing. I slept well on a cold night but was still a bit slow off the mark this morning. Breakfast of wheat flakes and then the morning paper. The builders were very busy today, keeping me occupied running around after them. I had to lend the electricians/plumber a circular saw for the floorboards and then I worked with him to watch the carpets being taken up in the guest’s bedroom and hallway. Then the fitting of my pond liner which turned out to be tailored perfectly to line the complicated shape. The plumber laid the pipes across the house, though he still had to connect the ends. I will have to re-lay the floorboards and carpets to my satisfaction. The builders filled the pond partially with water to set the liner firmly into place; and then started putting on the curb stones that hold in place.

There seems to be a problem with levels, as the floor is higher than optimum. Then they seem to overlook the fact that we needed double glass doors between the lounge and conservatory altogether but then the plans were ambiguous. I agreed to share the extra cost with them. This evening, I received a number of phone calls following my latest FOCUS and had to call round to see a group of angry residents of Park Avenue who had a dog problem. Then, for the rest of the evening, on to a Priory Doom meeting. The news this evening is of the House of Commons announcement for increased pensions for older and disabled pensioners. It seems to come in the wake of the Chancellor’s discomfiture over a Sunday journalist briefing a couple of weeks ago when he talked of means testing pension benefits. From South Africa, news of liberalised conditions for the holding of Nelson Mandela which seems to come instead of the political prisoner’s release. Today the St Neots Weekly News printed the first half – three pages and photos – of their Little Paxton feature and I was pleased that these results of my work. Plenty of coverage in the rest of the local papers of the chemical leak in the District Council meeting wherein I had quite a few mentions.
