Diana broke down and cried about having lost her driving confidence after Della's accident

The long journey from Edinburgh to home to find both family and political party conflicts galore when Di, Debbie and Della could be pacified but the fall-out between Michael and Ross looked to be more intransigent.

A call at 7.00am and then breakfast at 7.30am, intending to get going by 8.00am. Breakfast took a little longer than intended and then we found the morning very cold, frosty with the thick fog leading to many radio weather warnings about black ice. We took off gingerly along the route and then made better progress on the motorways. Finally arrived at Birmingham Airport in late afternoon and swapped my things over to my own car for the rest of the journey home. I got there to find Diana there and Debbie at the hospital.

Di was worn out and sitting in front of the TV and I scanned a list of my telephone messages, my mail and headlines of the local newspapers to find that an unholy row had broken out within our Liberal Democrat Town Council Group concerning Michael Pope and Ross McKay. Michael had called for Ross's exclusion from the group for indiscipline and done so in a very public way and saying, in effect, that either he or Ross had to go! This was all I wanted with all of my other problems. Percy had written to them both, asking them both to desist from more public comment.

Diana and I then set off for the hospital and I found that Di was driving along at only 50mph along the dual carriageway which was a danger in my view because of the main traffic speeding along much faster. i should have left it at that but, being in a hurry, I pulled her over and asked what was wrong and she broke down and cried about having lost her driving confidence after Della's accident. She had not slept for three nights and found driving in the dark, morning and night, a great strain.

She then called me all the names under the sun for ruining her remaining confidence and I had a major problem on my hands. Eventually got her and both cars to the hospital and then, after sorting Debbie and Della out from the argument borne of their extended time together and got Diana to drive herself home, I settled down to get Della settled and off to sleep. There had not been any further developments with Della and we had to await the morning for information.
