An Iraqi Scud missile hit a US forces billet, killing 27soldiers and injuring nearly 100 more

It was another mild day which was just as well as the heating was off for most of it as the electrician worked. I worked on my tax affairs and investments for most of the time as well as hosting Sally and then took the family for a Little Chef evening meal.

The Allied land war is said to be going very well but an Iraqi Scud missile hit a US forces billet, killing 27 soldiers and injuring nearly 100. The Court of Appeal today decided that the evidence against the famed "Birmingham Six" was unsafe and unsound.

We were expecting the electrician to have the power off for most of the working day and so Diana had planned to go out this morning to avoid the disruption. I wanted to go as well but she said she was very busy and wanted to get on. I was a little late up and Debbie was just going off to school as I came down to breakfast. Settled into my office and set about my computer work until I was disrupted. In the end it was well into the afternoon before the power had to go off in my half of the house and I then went over to Nigel's to collect my copy of the "Word" software package and stayed for a coffee and a long chat.

The power was still off on my return and so I took the girls out to the Little Chef for tea and still the power was off when we got back. In fact it was mid-evening before the electrician had left and it then took me until quite late to rectify the security alarm faults that he had caused and also to re-lay the floor-boarding and vacuum the area so that it could revert to normal. We would need to secure the floorboarding much better before the carpet layer arrives next Monday. I had edited most of my investment files during the day and decided how to proceed for the tax year end. I called our accountants and stockbroker and sold a few small packages of shares to realise our gains tax allowance and then calculated what other steps were needed to maximise our situation. T

his evening, Sally came round, and we touched base and organised a few things together and then I finished off a tiring day by updating this last two days' journal. I am not sure about the IBM-compatible Word package and may well still by the "Word-with-windows" version and a mouse from Tansley Micros. I could then use the same operating procedure with the portable that I use on my main Mac micro as the alternative is very cumbersome. The Allied land war is said to be going very well but there still seems much to be done and plenty of scope for further casualties. In fact an Iraqi Scud missile hit a US forces billet, killing 27 soldiers and injuring many more today.

Back home, the British Rail main line stations were all closed again this morning as another IRA bomb exploded. Today continued mild which was just as well as the heating was off for most of it. The Court of Appeal today decided that the evidence against the famed "Birmingham Six" was unsafe and unsound and it seems that they will have to be released like other wrongly-convicted Irish prisoners. This strikes at the credibility of the British Appeals system.
